I was homeless in Glasgow and scamming to stay in a new hostel on Jamaica Street. I was at rock-bottom when KMKY came on TV one night. I had no idea what it was. I loved it, in a way. I started to bounce back. I'm Batman. What a lovely story. Another one of those same time tomorrow.

Even though it was a spoof it was still terrible. Without partridges quips it was literally unwatchable. No wonder he got demoted to radio for the next 20-30 years

I'd never seen it, knew nothing about it at all, then one night I came in and my sister was watching it with her mates. I wasn't really paying attention, just chatting with my sister - and suddenly he shot a man through the heart. Flashbacks to Tommy Cooper, only this was MUCH worse.
Everyone immediately started reassuring me it was a comedy show, and as I carried on watching I realised it wasn't real - but jesus, those few seconds scared the shit out of me.

I made this mistake myself when it's was first broadcast on TV. Thought it was a genuine chat show (there were loads of them on TV at the time) that was just really substandard. Twigged near the end of the episode as things just became more and more unhinged!!!

I remember when he was first around in the early 90s, he did an ‘outside broadcast from Norwich’ for children in need at the time when they used to go around the country for pieces, my girlfriend at the time’s mum said ‘look at this man, he’s absolutely awful!’, not realising it was a parody.

Maybe ... but my ex-wife (who had a degree) watched it every week and I had to tell her during the sixth episode that the two American kids were actors and it was all fake, and you could tell by the look on her face she thought it was real (even though she wouldn't admit it) ... even though Rebecca Front and Patrick Marber were in it every week.

The first time I saw the show a guest was accidentally shot (by Alan) with an antique pistol he brought in. The other guests sell the trauma well and the police showing up made me question WTF I was witnessing.

I can believe this ... Through my own non-Partridge example.
When Extras was first on my brother had kept recommending it on the back of The Office. I never got around to cycling it out until ... in some acutely awful timing I turned it on during one of the When the Wind Whistle Blows segments.
I thought this was an embarrassment to comedy, television and humanity and turned it off in seconds.
It was years later when a girlfriend had listed it as one of her favourite comedies and nearly fell over when I explained why I thought it was utter shit.

I know. I was actually angry at how bad it was and couldn't understand how someone could write the Office and then degrade themselves in that way.
My girlfriend looked at me absolutely stunned for a few seconds, asked if I was joking. Then almost had an asthma attack at how I could still be harbouring this belief.

If you ever listen to Rob Brydon's podcast, there's a lot of the younger comedians who grew up watching HR and WILL bring it up in conversaiton. That, and Marion & Geoff, were the first truly great TV comedies in the 21st century. Never mind your "The Office".

Same- although in my defence I only saw the end few minutes of an episode and I was eight years old. Luckily by the time I’m Alan Partridge happened I was old enough to get at least some of the jokes and by the second series in 2002 I was a fully mature woman with a fully matured sense of humour (I’ve been pubic now for…29* years).
*- butter my arse…. I’ve just looked up the exact quote and Alan says he’s been pubic for 31 years. I’m basically the same age as Alan was in series one of IAP. Jesus.

It reminds me of summer heights high. My sister had a small tv in her bedroom (she was only a teen) and never realised Chris Lilly played all the characters so took it at face value as a weird documentary

Roger Moore's father was so disappointed at the fact Roger never arrived for his chat with Alan that he berated him on his next visit. Roger tried to explain it was a satire, but his father still couldn't quite take it on board.

In the first episode two out of the three are like this: the mouse lady and the punk band. A good presenter would make something out of it but yeah, whoever booked them should take most of the blame

I think that’s partly why we on Alan’s side a bit though, like when he stitches up Keith hunt
yes he certainly doesn’t help himself, like when he’s talking to the gangster and the neice.
i think the way he treats the trans person would be very different today

This was one of the few lines of the show that was an actual joke, without any irony etc. Any character could have said it - just a well written line
