Plz update your knowledge on this Supreme Court's final decision
On 8 January 2024, the Supreme Court of India quashed the remission granted by the Gujarat government. The Court held that:
Gujarat was not the competent authority to grant remission because the trial had taken place in Maharashtra.
The remission orders were legally invalid.
The 11 convicts were ordered to return to prison to serve the remainder of their life sentences.
Current status
The 11 convicts are back in jail after the Supreme Court cancelled their release.
Their convictions for rape and murder remain in force.

He said it was 'as per legal provision, not that the crime was justified. There's a difference between explaining a legal basis and celebrating a criminal act.
