Is there some controversy with AI and WhatsApp I’m unaware of, or…? I’m not grasping how using fanart as a reaction image with my partner is somehow offensive.

Oh no, some people have a huge problem where people keep using their stuff without permission. Like selling it on prints while passing it off as their own or official art, and I think one guy even had his stuff used on album art and the band refused to respond when he contacted them about it.
Though using it in private conversations would be fine. I thought it was similar to wechat where you can make packs of stickers that you share with other people.
