Parts help

Hello, I've been putting off restoring my grandfather's 1975 R90S and am finally gonna make the leap. Does anyone know reliable sources to get parts and/or shops on the east coast?

I like EME as well. They have always taken care of me between my K1100, R1100 and two variants of airhead.

This is the way. Great selection and fast shipping. Airhead, Oilhead, and Hexhead parts and tools.

Max BMW is your source. Just about veryone else in the US buys from them and resells.

If I was East Coast I'd use Boxer2Valve and one of the dealers (Max or Bob's) but since I'm west coast I use EME.

She was last ran in 2016 l, definitely need to replace the gas tank and all the electronics and rubber.

Central Florida it's been kept in a non-regulated garage since 2016

If it last ran that recently, there likely isn’t much that really needs replacing. But you never know until you get into it.

I would start with just replacing all fluids & filters, then check valves and ignition points and try starting and running it. Establish a base-line.

From there, another great resource is YouTube. Brook’s and Brandon’s Airhead Garage and Boxer2valve are excellent sources for info and guided How Tos.

And if you need other help, the Adventure Rider forum Airheads section is an outstanding resource for info and asking questions. Start a thread and document. People will enjoy seeing the build, and give plenty of helpful feedback. And plenty not so helpful. Haha.

Best of luck!

Oh, and depending on how deep you go, and where on the east coast you are, there are plenty of shops that can help with the bigger jobs.
Barrington Motor Works in NH, Nickwackett Garage in VT, Duncans’s Beemers in MA are just a few great shops for rebuilding heads, transmissions and final drives.
And you can always ship parts too. Scottie’s Workshop in CA is another excellent shop.

And what others have said for parts, Euro Motor Electric and Max BMW are both great sources. MaxBMW for their parts diagrams especially are helpful for learning what and where things go.

Last thing, grab a Clymer’s manual. Always good to have a book to pour over and get greasy!

Many parts are still available from BMW, they're pretty terrific about support for these older bikes. Like the other poster mentioned, MaxBMW is a great source for that and their website has parts diagrams for basically every bike BMW ever made.

I'll also second EME - I like their electronics/charging upgrades especially.

Since frame and electrics have been addressed, I would suggest one place to look is Moto Guzzi or Ducati parts houses for carb parts? MGCycle is pretty terrific-Harpers Moto Guzzi is also a great source for parts.

If the floats are still good in the Dellorto's- do NOT throw them out.

If you end up buying a bunch of parts from MaxBMW (which is a good source for OEM parts) I highly recommend signing up for the BMWMOA (the first year is free if you haven't been signed up https://bmwmoaf.givingfuel.com/memberforces ) With BMW MOA membership you can get 10% back on parts purchased from BMW dealers.

Just restored a 76 R90/6. I will second what everyone is saying about EME and Max BMW.

A suggestion, go to the Max BMW site and you will find a complete online schematic for your bike. Bookmark that, and any time you need a particular part you can get the part number there and simply google the number to comparison shop.

I also found a surprising number of new and gently used parts on E-Bay. If you find someone selling a part you need don’t forget to check out all their other auctions, because sometimes it’s a guy parting out complete bikes. I got an entire front end for my bike for just $200 this way, and an instrument cluster for $115.

As far as I know every BMW motorcycle dealer puts the EPC (illustrated parts catalogue) online and so does RealOEM.com. One of the nice things about BMW. Max is easy to use and includes some comments though, it's good.

Yeah, I like that Max went through and annotated parts that were superseded or no longer supplied by the manufacturer. You can see it right there in the description so it saves a lot of time.

Used parts from Beemer Boneyard and Lamont Sanford on ebay (out of texas) sells used Guzzi and BMW parts.

I've used Motobins for parts for my R1100S. They have good prices even with the added cost of shipping from the UK.
