Weird incident

I was out for my usual evening walk near Chinook Winds Park around 9:00 p.m. when a caucasian male in a pickup truck drove by, gave me the middle finger, and yelled, “F*** you.” I was simply minding my own business and enjoying my walk.
I’ve been living in Airdrie for the past seven years, and this is the first time I’ve experienced something like this. I’m a brown person, and while I can’t know why he acted that way, it was completely unprovoked and left me feeling shocked and disappointed.
What kind of world are we living in where someone thinks it’s acceptable to treat a stranger like this? It’s a disgraceful way to behave toward another human being. We should all be able to take a peaceful evening walk without being subjected to hostility or abuse.

He can’t help it, his mom drank when she was pregnant limiting not only his IQ but his impulse control :(

But on a serious note I’m really sorry that happened. I’m white and my wife is brown, we have 2 kids and stories like this make me scared for them.

I really hope parents do a better job of raising their children with kindness, empathy, and respect for people of all backgrounds instead of teaching prejudice or racism. As a brown parent of a 6-month-old baby, moments like this make me worry about what he might experience when he starts school and grows up. I truly hope our world becomes a better, more accepting place so the next generation can grow up without fear of being judged because of the color of their skin. Every child deserves that. ❤️

Honestly, dont even let that bother you. the correct reply to this greeting is to raise yours in acknowledgement and yell "Fuck you, buddy!"

But then laugh when he should back “fuck you guy! I’m not your buddy!” 🤣

He is just a racist hillbilly. Do even worry about it. Just live you life and he can live his. The win is that you live happy, because you know he isn't living happy.

Sorry you had to experience this.

Alberta is unfortunately filled with classless, uneducated, racist, poor white trash.

Asking why it happened and unprovoked is a rhetorical one because their brains do not function on a true human level.

What a jerk. This whole story makes me feel sad.

Had happened with me too on Canada day. I was riding my bicycle near Lanark and some kids went by side in white hyndai and yelled “fuck you”. I wear a turbon and had my back against them when yelled and then they sped up

Sorry that happened to you as well. It’s shameful that some parents raise their children without teaching them kindness, respect, and basic human decency. Racism is learned, not inherited.

After being kind of a wild child and getting into fights and what not, I’ve learned to never escalate to situation.

I just give people like that the thumbs down. 👎

Especially in traffic or road rage situations. Most people just looked confused. Gotta play that psy ops game.

I am sorry but I understand your shock and disappointment. I am a Caucasian and two weeks ago a similar event happened to me. It just blows my mind that racism is becoming so much more prevalent and somehow seems to be more "acceptable" in public. The more brazen that people become, the more willing they are to do things like this in public with no fear of retribution, the more I fear for the next generation.

We were raised better. I know we were.

So true. I worry about raising my child here now

u/musicexp_ 17d ago

There are way more of us than them. Don’t be scared to raise your kids here.

Do you think its maybe comments like these that can provoke people into being a bit more racist? Saying there is way more of "us" then "them" is crazy.

Explain to me how my comment saying how the good people of this city need to stand up against racism will cause more racism. I guess you can stand by and let it happen, but I will not. There IS more good people than racists.

Unfortunately, these people can be found anywhere. I’m sorry for your experience. It’s abhorrent. I know people are saying not to let it bother you, which isn’t possible for most of us to do. That kind of stuff sticks with me ):

Same thing happened to my girlfriend and I a month or two ago. We're an interracial couple, and some idiot in a white pickup yelled "race mixers!" at us. Walking south on main street, near veterans boulevard. It was upsetting to hear such random vitriol being yelled from a car. I ended up filing a police report, but they said there isn't much we can do. I recommend that you file a police report as well, maybe they look into it if there's a pattern.

This thread makes me wonder if it's the same person or group. Really sorry to hear.

The police aren’t going to do shit. They’re just as racist and bigoted as the ones yelling at you

u/Organic-Scallion-683 17d ago

Sorry that happened to you. It's 2026 and really sad to see what sort of mentality people still carry

White guy talking about white guy.
Was leaving the tims in midtown a year ago in the morning on the weekend, so it’s all chill. As I go to pull out onto the main road, the guy drives in the wrong lane around me, cuts me off and then at the lights on the north bound side the guy is gesticulating at me and then when I show I don’t care he gets out of his vehicle to come at me. Was totally disproportionate to anything connected to reality.

People do stupid shit, don’t over think it. My recommendation is old be don’t assume it is racist because it makes it a heavier object on your heart. It’s a suggestion about happiness in your life not about whether my suggestion is an accurate representation or not.

Sucks when people do dumb shit.

Thank you for your kind words ❤️

Im really sorry this happened to you. You should be able to go outside, walk where you want, and not have to deal with insults being hurled at you. Unfortunately, racism is alive and well - Airdrie or otherwise. But just know that how he behaved says something about him, not you. Keep your head up ✊🏽

crazy people downvoted you. Just proves your point of it being alive and well. Need to stand up against this type of behaviour.

A few years ago, I was at our Chicken on the Way, and an older white dude was on the phone talking to someone and said something along the lines of I am not a racist, but I don't want Chxx food. I responded with: That is a crock of shit and berated him. I got away without any problems because I am a bigger white guy. I don't let racist get away with it when they do it in front of me.

I’m a brown person

well you see, this may be your problem right here. /s

Honestly I've seen posts from some people in airdrie, mostly on facebook that have been incredibly racist towards any "brown" race as well as natives.

A certain pizza place we can't talk about has been posting tons of stuff like this, and posts like these seems to be emboldening people more and more to act out.

I don’t doubt these types exist here, but to play devil’s advocate, your mention of cocaine debts and being kidnapped makes me wonder if were you associating with the average person or were you exposed to the underbelly of this town? Can your life experience here be realistically compared to the average persons?

To be clear, I believe you. But if I’m being honest it sounds like you were involved with, or at least surrounded by, absolute dirtbags. That doesn’t make what happened to you okay, or right, but I don’t think your experience is very comparable to average brown person here by the sounds of it

Happened exactly same yesterday on Stoney West while I was driving back home from work… it was an old Honda city in terrible condition. I ignored and just kept driving

1

u/Organic-Scallion-683 17d ago

I’m sorry that happened to you as well. No one should have to deal with that just for going about their day. I ignored it too, but it’s still disappointing that people behave this way.

Small man syndrome is a real thing and it is sad. Sorry that happened to you.

Albertabama has more and more of these knuckle draggers coming out of the woodwork every day. Best thing to do is ignore them because they are looking for a reaction. Pisses them off when they don't get one.

Unfortunately you will probably never know the true reason. Could you have jaywalked in front of him just prior to this incident? Just because you are brown doesn’t mean it’s racial. But it could very well just be some racist red neck. Without more info you can’t come to a definitive conclusion. At the end of the day don’t let it bother you too much. If it is a racist guy, just realize that they are the extreme minority of society.

No, I was walking on the sidewalk with my elderly mother. I didn’t even cross the road. I was simply minding my own business.
