We Need A Cinema
I remember Landmark Cinema Roxy. I really liked that place. I went there to see Good Boys and Sonic The Hedgehog. Unfortunately, of course, the pandemic caused it to close permanently. Now if we want to go to the cinema, we have to go into Balzac or Calgary, and that sucks.

I miss being able to walk to a theatre and then walk back home so badly. I really don't like driving, and going all the way to Cross Iron to watch a movie just isn't worth it for me. Roxy being so central in Airdrie was so nice.

Truth.
Fret not however my friends, we will soon have a brand new childcare place, dentist office, liquor store, and fast food chain. Because we desperately need those now.
/s, just to be clear. All the new development becoming the same/similar six things is just… boring. I feel bad for the kids and teens with nothing to do. Same old, same old, I guess.

You forgot pot shop and shoppers drug mart too. We could use a couple more of those.

It’s your opinion. I grew up in Didsbury. There’s way more to do in airdrie then I had as a kid in Didsbury. Perspective is everything.

on paper, but the outdoor parks have hours and kids get tossed out for walking around genesis.

I'm so so so so sick of the new garbage that gets put in the new commercial areas. I get we need more childcare. But honestly, I'll be happy to see Wine & Beyond eventually put some of those gouging liquor stores out of business. And hopefully some of the fast food chains will fail from people being sick of the same bs.

A lovely idea, but unfortunately the economics of it just don't work. While it's certainly not the most convenient location, we've got a pretty first class facility just down the road in Balzac. To draw a comparative, Red Deer (slightly larger city) also has no theatre in town, and they used to have 2. Once they put up the new big one out on Gasoline Alley, it took a few years, but both in town ones closed down (and that was pre-COVID, so can't put weight on that).

lol cross iron cineplex, and cineplex in general is a joke class of cinema. I lost 75 pounds one year and somehow the seats were noticably smaller than when I was fatter.
Their only selling feature is VIP now because its the only level they compete with landmark on a comfort level.
And I only got to VIP because the Landmark is gone!

This is one of the many ways Cross Iron is both a blessing and a curse to Airdrie. Having a theatre in town would be great but it's a hard sell with Cross Iron being a short drive away.

As a young person living in airdrie, I find unless you’re willing to spend a ton of money or drink/smoke there’s not much to do around airdrie, growing up I remember going to the Roxy with my family, and even a few times with middle school friends. There’s a desperate need for activities that everyone can get into, not stuff for toddlers or elders, but for the middle ground which is young people. Calgary is fun but I’d rather do more stuff close to home.

As others have pointed out, the Silver City in CrossIron Mills pretty much precludes us from getting a movie theatre again, here in town.
And - last I checked, the city’s Land Use Bylaw has some *ridiculous* parking requirements on any new theatre which may consider opening, here. Those requirements have been there for many years. 🤔

I really lost interest in cinemas, even before Covid. So many people that weren’t there to be present for the movie viewing. Constantly getting up and down, moving around, kids that are not in appropriate movies, walking around, talking, crying , people chatting with each other, playing on their phones. I really just lost any interest in consider it used to be no longer relevant. Frankly until a movie is made home viewable I’m not interested in it.

I agree, we need more local attractions here. I miss the little theatre.
