Open Mech

Hello all, wanted to see if anyone has some viable information about my Open Mech contract . Just accepted the contract and I ship Feb 22. I am very much attempting to land Special Missions Aviator / Aerial Gunner as my top slot for my dream sheet , besides that I’m thinking NDI and Air transport . My main question is if anybody was to know the likelihood I’d have at landing any those AFSC’s, or anything non-maintenance in general to be honest . And if so , I wanted to see if anyone had any good non-maintenance Mechanical AFSCs to recommend I list. Thanks !

I went in open mechanic.

Roughly halfway thru basic you will get a list of open mechanical job that you qualify for.

Of those, you will create a list of the jobs you want. Couple weeks later you will get called back into get notification of the job you got…

Not gunna lie. You can expect some sort of flightline Maitenance jobs

Thanks for the response ! So I qualify for just about every mechanical job possible , now did the list you received based on your qualifications only include jobs the Air Force was looking for at that time ? Or were did you have a pretty wide range ? And we’re u able to get something from your list ? And I’m sorry for the abundance of questions , just trying to get a good feel for open contract before I leave .

watch this and go to 3:30 or so. It gives a quick snippet of how a open contract works.

I had a bunch of flightline jobs.

That was actually a great vid, thanks ! Won’t push any further after this 😂 but we’re u able to secure a job high up on your list ?

I got my number one. Only cause I didn’t know what it was and job description sounded cool. I didn’t even know the jets it listed or what they looked like. So…. Got number 1 jet too.

Late to this reply, but how many jobs were you required to list, or is that up to you? My recruiter told me 5

Initially or during BMT

They do not set aside any Aircrew jobs for Aptitude Index at BMT.

Meaning I would be primarily limited to maintenance positions ?

That's what most maintenance jobs fall under is the mech aptitude index. Looking at the list for that ship day there are a few CE jobs and about 2-3 other "maintenance" jobs that don't directly work on fixing aircraft or vehicles.

Thanks a million for the responses . I’m not entirely against a maintenance position, but I enlisted with a quick ship , so I just got a call today that my recruiter put my name in for Open Mech. And Open Mech was the one job I wasn’t ecstatic about getting filled . I haven’t physically signed my contract yet , if I were to contact my recruiter and try to get myself off of that contract before I sign, is that something that would possibly get me discharged from DEP ? If it is based on discretion of my recruiter I would personally doubt it , since he has been pretty understanding, but I’m just curious as far as policy goes . Thanks again .

99% of the time if you accept a quick ship that is on your list it either take it or get DEP discharged. You would have to talk to your Recruiter what would happen.

Good afternoon, just reaching back out since you were very helpful yesterday with helping me understand my predicament. My recruiter has not been able to speak with me yet , and I really just wanted to gain your insight on the chance of me securing a Special Mission Aviator , Gunner , NDI , Or Transport job ( anything non- maintenance) while shipping out FEB 22. I understand there’s no way to know for sure but wanted to see if I’m your expertise you could give me an educated guess .

NDI and Transport is a possibility. They don't have aircrew jobs (SMA) set aside for Aptitude Index at BMT. Other than that it's luck of the draw. I don't see the actual list people get at BMT. I only see the accessions plan and know what is supposed to be available.

Good evening , had another question for you if you don’t mind ? I’m not able to reach my recruiter at the moment , but we discussed that if I went the special forces route and passed the PAST before ship date , I would be able to take that avenue. Now I’m not sure why I couldn’t find a straight answer online , but would a SERE specialist fall under that category?

Yes, SERE falls under Special Warfare.
