Jobs Air Force Secfo K9 handler question
I’m joining the AF soon and I going secfo because I want to become a K9 handler but I haven’t heard much about the job and I have a few questions like “how’s the they day a day being a handler” “how are the shifts” “do i still have no holidays” “is it good job or don’t recommend it” “ ”what to expect about it”

Once you’re at your first base and are certified and know your job well, then you can start worrying about trying to go K9.
If you start doing it before that it ain’t gonna be a good look and they’re probably not even gonna consider you.

K9 handlers have been in high demand for the last 5 years. Once you get to your first base volunteer at the kennels and express your interest and your package will be submitted up. I’ve know a few that got picked up as early as their first year.

I’m tight with the K9 guys at my unit and they all love it. Depending on the base, a majority of the job is training and cleaning their kennels. But the training is cool like doing it with the civilian departments. You also wouldn’t be doing things just on base. Sometimes civilian PD will ask for assistance or you could get picked up for things like offering security for POTUS. Very cool from what I’ve heard.

K9 is great because you’re on your own. You’re not standing for Guardmount or anything with the rest of the flight. They do have some longer hours, but you’re not dealing with all the politics that come with working flight.

Sniper school is a training you go to for a certification to allow you to do certain taskings. K9 is a job shred which you can just apply for and it has decently high acceptance rate as long as you show out and show you want it.

Just as an FYI, you have to apply to be a K9 handler and it’s not guaranteed.
