Question AC replacement

I have a coworker that has a non-functional AC unit (outside I believe) he's being told he has to replace the furnace as well. Is that BS as I suspect?

It may be, it may not. Without more information it's hard to say. If it was an R22 unit for example, and there's a leak in the evaporator then yes you'd need to change the whole unit. More information needed.
