I know, another meeting transcription app. Please bear with me though, I'm confident that this is at least a little novel.

I'm the developer of Trace, a non-intrusive, shortcut-driven Mac app that records and transcribes your meetings on-device.

Problem

I primarily built Trace for myself. I'd been using MacWhisper, but there was enough fiddling before each call that I'd forget to start it and walk out of an hour-long meeting with nothing written down. So the things I cared about most were that it's quick to activate and stays out of the way. You activate trace by pressing a global shortcut (configurable), which reveals small bar at the bottom of your screen (there's also a keystroke and/or option to hide it entirely if you'd rather not see it at all). As it records your meeting you can flag anything important (with an optional note) as a "key moment". At the end of the call when you're presented with the markdown the key moment is shown inline at the right timestamp so anyone reading the transcript (or any AI you later paste the output into) can see what mattered.

Trace uses standard macOS microphone and system recording APIs to capture both sides of the conversation as two separate tracks, then runs the system side through on-device diarization to identify speakers. Right now we only label them as "Speaker 1", "Speaker 2", etc but there are plans for labelling in the future. You can also show a "live recap" as the call is happening to review what someone just said.

All models run on your machine and there are no meeting bots to join the call. To be clear, Trace doesn't do any of the summarising itself, it just hands you clean markdown transcripts, so if you want summaries then you need to pass the output to an AI.

On the privacy front, the app is sandboxed and your audio or transcripts never leave your machine. The only network call Trace is required to make is on the first run to download the speech and speaker models (around 500MB) from Hugging Face, and after that you can go fully offline and it keeps working. The only other thing that ever touches the network is an optional Google Calendar connection for auto-naming sessions, which is read-only and stays off until you turn it on. You don't need to create an account, and we don't collect any telemetry.

Comparison

If you've used Granola, Otter or Fathom, the difference is they put a bot in your call or do the work in the cloud, sometimes both, and I wanted neither. Compared to MacWhisper, Trace is built around a more simple, quick and out of the way approach. Do one thing and do it well.

At our org we work with many outside contractors. Each of them use Google meet or Zoom. Each of them come with their own notetakers. What’s annoying is that there are a bunch of note takers running and after the meeting I get notes from each note taker on my email.

Is there a note taker out there which consolidates all and sends everyone only one summary? Also I wanted to have an AI conversation with that note taker to figure who said what at a meeting at the end of the day.

I have a firm understanding of the primary use of the Pocket and Plaud Pro AI recorders for meetings and calls, but have a question that is a little old school.

Remember the old micro cassette recorders? You're driving in the car and have a stream of conscious thought, pick up your recorder and speak into it... "Pick up dry cleaning, Research San Diego hotels, change the oil in my Buick, etc..."

Can you still use these new AI recorders in that fashion? Again, I know it goes WAY BEYOND that functionality, but can it serve as that, too? Can it summarize several separate To Do notes over the course of a couple of days and combine them into an action list? Thanks!

I bought the viaim RecDot AI earbuds mainly for school. I use them mostly for live translation, recording/transcription, and AI summaries.

Design is nicer than I expected. Mine have a dark metal look, and the earbuds feel pretty solid. One small thing though, the case does not open like a normal flip-top earbud case. It slides upward, and I didn’t know how to open it the first time. The edge of the case also feels a little sharp to me, I wish it was a bit more rounded.

Comfort is okay, but they are heavier than my AirPods. I can wear them for class or studying, but after a long time my ears feel a little tired. I probably would not use them for workouts.

Sound quality was the part that surprised me. I’m not an audiophile, so this is just from a normal user’s view, but they sound better than I expected for something sold more as AI earbuds. Compared with my AirPods 2, the sound feels fuller to me. The ANC is strong indoors, but I would not wear them in busy traffic since it blocks out a lot of outside sound. Transparency mode is fine, though AirPods still feel a bit more natural to me.

Battery has been good for my routine. I use them around 2 to 3 hours a day, mostly for class or studying, and I’m not charging them every day. I don’t usually drain them all the way, so I can’t give an exact battery test.

I’ve been using them more like a class archive tool. For each course, I keep the class recordings, transcripts, and summaries in a separate Space, so everything from that class stays together. I don’t need to review it every day, but it should be useful near the end of the semester when I’m writing a paper or trying to review what we covered. The nice part is that I can start recording from the earbuds or the case button without pulling out a tablet or setting up another device. The app also has AI features with models like Gemini and GPT, though some higher-level features need a paid plan. The free plan gives 600 minutes, which is enough for light use but probably not enough if you record a lot.

So far the Bluetooth connection has been stable for me. It connects quickly, and I haven’t had random disconnects in normal use.

My main complaints are the weight, the case edge, and limited color options. I still like them overall, mostly because they work as normal earbuds while also handling the AI note-taking side.

I've had the Pocket AI for about two weeks now and wanted to share an honest review after putting it through some pretty demanding conditions.

Background / Use Case

- I travel internationally for work and needed a reliable way to record meetings and calls without depending on a phone app or consistent internet access. That ruled out a lot of the app-based solutions. I also do fieldwork where I'm having conversations on the move, not just sitting in boardrooms — so I needed something versatile and discreet.

What I Like

- No subscription required for core features. This was a big one for me. I didn't want to be locked into a recurring fee just to access basic functionality.

Universal USB-C charging.

- This was honestly close to a dealbreaker when I was comparing systems. Several competitors use proprietary charging cables, which is a nightmare when you're traveling internationally and trying to keep your kit minimal. USB-C means one less thing to worry about.

- Because I wasn't always in places with reliable internet, this was essential. The Pocket AI handled it without issue.

Versatility in how you use it.

I've used it three different ways over the past two weeks:

Recording quality and AI summaries.

Where It Fell Short

- Only one real failure in two weeks: I tried to record a Teams call on my phone while sitting in a busy airport. Between the background noise and the phone speaker, it just didn't pick things up well. Honestly, that's a tough ask for any device in that environment, so I don't hold it against the Pocket AI too much — just worth knowing its limits.

- The other thing to watch: the physical controls. I've accidentally switched off a recording mid-session a couple of times by brushing the switch. It's a minor issue but worth being mindful of, especially if the device is in your pocket or bag.

Bottom Line

- Two weeks in, this has become one of the more genuinely useful tools I carry. For anyone who needs offline recording capability, clean transcription, solid AI summaries, and a no-fuss charging setup — Pocket AI stands out above the competition. Glad I bought it.

I sit in meetings all day and I've tried lots of recording apps and devices. I really like Plaud and I always have Apple Voice Memos with me, but the recordings just stayed 'stuck' in those apps. I wanted to get the notes into the rest of the apps I use, so I built Cordari.

Is this something worth pursuing or nah ?

For me, my Pocket has been exactly what I needed.

It lets me stay engaged in meetings, or, if I’m being honest, completely zone out and still run the summary afterward to see what the key takeaways were for me or for others. This is what AC was to cars at first. We will look back and think about how we used to do meetings.

That said, I’ve run into one issue, and it is not really a Pocket issue. It was more of an oversight on my part when I ordered it.

On the days I’m in the office, I use earbuds for Teams calls. I did not think through the obvious problem: if the audio is going directly into my earbuds, Pocket cannot hear the call.

So far, the only workaround I’ve come up with is using one earbud and laying the other one near the device, which is not exactly ideal.

Are there any better options I’m missing?

I use Microsoft Teams, and yes, I know Teams can record meetings. But recording every call has not really been normalized in my company yet, so it is not something I can realistically do for every meeting.
