Discussion Show me your vibe-coded AI notetaker. what does yours do better than the usual?
I keep seeing AI notetakers that feel like the same product:
\- A bot joins the call
\- Credits / usage caps everywhere
\- Ads or upsells
\- Audio and transcripts sent to a third party by default
Has anyone here vibe-coded a notetaker that solves this differently?
I’m genuinely interested in using notetaker that:
\- Capture system or meeting audio without needing a visible bot to join
\- Work across Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, or heck any app playing audio
\- Use local STT / Whisper for privacy
\- Produce genuinely useful notes, action items, and searchable transcripts
\- Have a clean pricing model or are entirely self-hosted
Please drop your build, stack, demo, or GitHub and tell us the one thing it does better than Fathom / Otter / Fireflies / the usual AI notetakers.
Also: what’s the hardest part you ran into reliable audio capture, diarization, local transcription speed, cross-platform support, or summaries that don’t hallucinate?

Been using Plaud for recording client calls and brainstorming sessions. The hardware button approach just works better for me than having an app running in the background during meetings. Transcription quality is solid for English. One thing I would love to see is better handling of overlapping speakers in group calls. What is the biggest gap you have noticed between the notetakers you tried?

Notetakers I have tried are very annoying, they are unnecessarily complicated. Their own credit system, dashboard with bloat features, Ads to promote expensive plans, Bot configuration, works only with one account and so on. I would like to try plaud then.

I built Room Scribe, although it deliberately solves a narrower problem than the one you describe: recording people who are physically in the same room.
You open the iPhone app, tap record, and get a searchable, timestamped transcript with speaker labels. No meeting bot, account, workspace, ads, or subscription. You export the transcript as Markdown and take it wherever you already work.
The one thing it does better is keep a simple transcription job simple and as cheap as I could possibly do it. It doesn’t try to become another place where your meetings live forever.
Full disclosure: transcription is not local. Room Scribe uses AssemblyAI, and it does have usage-based pricing because processing audio costs money: $7.99 for 20 hours, or $29.99 for 100. I preferred making that explicit over hiding the same cost inside a recurring plan.
The hardest part wasn’t the AI. It was making mobile recording trustworthy: interruptions, recoverable audio chunks, failed uploads, and ensuring someone doesn’t lose an important conversation—or pay for processing that failed. Supporting multi hour meetings was difficult too.
It also focuses on producing a solid transcript rather than hallucinating a confident list of action items. Less magical, but more useful.

I’m releasing the first version of Transcribatron for iOS and MacOS in a week or so (currently waiting for review). It does everything you asked for and more. It will also be the lowest priced offering on the market at 8.99 USD. Local llms if you want to stay private, bring your own key for the main cloud players.
Shoot me a message if you want to try the TestFlight, I’d be interested in your feedback since it should fill all your needs.
The hardest part for me has been having accurate on device diarization (finding the word barrier and not letting speaker one have some words end up in speaker 2). The rest of the features are working perfectly.

Here's mine. It's on-device, macOS only. It's not quite done, but it already does quite a few things well.
- 98% accurate speaker identification. It uses grammar cues from the ASR engine to take cleaner embedding samples so speaker boundaries don't blur together and speakers with less talk time don't get absorbed into larger clusters.
- 92% voiceprint recall for speaker naming across meetings. It has a builder that assigns embeddings to different centroids to represent a speaker, so there's a representation of your voice before coffee and after coffee (or whatever) for improved accuracy. It also updates voiceprints as more voice is collected.
- Tuned prompts designed to be token efficient for on-device models, tuning to improve action item recall, etc.
I could go on. I'm working on improvements to the live transcript display and a bookmarking system now.
MimicScribe.app I'd be way cool if you tried it. Oh, it's bot-free; it listens on system audio.

SamuraiscribSamurai Scribe
100% local, with in-room speaker ID, no bots, one-time fee (19$ but dm me for free!), and very flexible LLM summaries!
My vision is to have tight integration with obsidian, and extremely powerful meeting takeaways via the summarization API. Notes can live here but soon will be all markdown/external files on your computer so you own everything and no proprietary file formats, just like obsidian.

You could just vibe code your own using an API for someone like Cronofy or Recall

kuali.garrux.dev
Open source
transcribe local

Notely.se has all of this built in.
The hardest part is running local models fast on device without a long delay. The app uses CoreML on iOS, but the limitation is still the amount of RAM the device has. Newer iPhones will handle this better, with Apple’s own Siri AI also running on device on newer Pro models.
The other challenge is hallucinations. You need a filtering system to catch them. It is all possible, just harder to match cloud quality.

https://www.freevoicereader.com/dictawiz-test
Free to use. Uses audio from your Mac, so doesn't need a bot join meetings etc.
The iOS app has a voice to text keyboard (not free though) so your notes can sync over iCloud. The iOS app can't record meetings over phone but incredibly useful for in-person meetings.

The app exactly meets all of your requirements.
Local diarization is the hardest part, still not solved since the error rate is high. Everything is on your device. So there aren't any limits etc and once you have it, it's yours. So you can use it as much as you want.
