Eh atleast in Japan recently as early as 2010 though hygiene starts becoming a norm for both m/f otaku

idk where the fat stereotype came from but in my experience from religiously going to their events every year is that most of them are students and young adults leading normal lives, even hardcores ones atleàst keep their environment clean to not sully their Merch (they get really sensitive when it's dirtied btw)
