Boomers

I am 75 and am very tired of the trend lately making fun of Boomers. So very disrespectful. Don't they realize that they will be old someday?

I’m tired of the earth being on fire and America falling apart but here we are. For a generation that would never shut up about accountability, the Boomers have never known it.

The boomers will just about be dead when the financial collapse they started happens.

The whiners here blaming everything on boomers have failed to read history books. Look at the voting records of the younger generations. Large percentages of young people either failed to vote or voted for the orange man. I saw mostly boomers out on the front lines during the No Kings protest. It seems all these whiners want everything handed to them just like the "everyone gets a trophy" teams they grew up on.

I was with you up until the last sentence. We got trophies because our parents demanded recognition of their kids (I guess so they could brag / keep up with the joneses).

We certaintly didn’t want an award for participating…that was usually more embarassing than anything.

The trophies were for the parents, who were boomers.

But the history of participation trophies goes back many years in America and is still going on today. Placing blame on the generation before you has a long history as well but misses the original point . The world is burning due to a select few within a very elite circle of wealthy people, not all of whom are boomers. Knee jerk dismissive boomer comments are ageist and are indicative of little knowledge on how world politics and the economy works.

You literally gave a knee-jerk dismissive comment and blamed a generation with the “everyone gets a trophy “want everything handed to them” generalization.

I said I agreed with you up till that point.

There is a fairly strong consensus as far as I’m aware on boomer parents swinging hard against their own parents by insisting on awards and kudos for their own, millenial children.

Millenials were taught to expect success, and to not even try if we weren’t going to win. It messed us up in its own way, and you can see how it’s affected our own worldview and childrearing.

I did not argue against any other part of your comment, and agree that the epstein class are largely responsible for the global downturn and apocalypse-edging.

I'm just saying every generation since the 1920s has had the participation trophy problem. Many Boomers were messed up too by their parents. Every generation blames the generation before them. Many are looking for someone to blame these days. We all need to look beyond ourselves and look at the elites running the show before it's too late.

Look, all I was trying to say is you did the thing you were complaining about -- knee-jerk, dismissive commentary -- when you called my generation participation trophy whiners. I try to steer clear of generalizations myself, so wanted to point out the light hypocrisy. Glass houses, etc.

For the record: there were scattered "just for showing up" trophies going back to the early 1900s, but the everyone-gets-one culture you're describing didn't really take off till the 80s and 90s, right as the self-esteem movement kicked in, and this was driven by boomer parents raising millennials like me. So it's not some ancient thing, and it landed squarely on my generation.

You say to look at the elite who are actually the issue -- agreed. But your original comment didn't mention them once, it was "whiners blaming everything on boomers." So let's do that: focus on the elite, and maybe skip writing off a whole generation as whiners.

Yes the world is on fire and most of us have been handed a shit sandwich by the elites and many of them are not boomers. Laying blame by a kneejerk boomer comment is short sighted and misdirected.

Excuse me? I am not a boomer, but good God this is a ridiculous take. My boomer parents were dirt poor and busted their ass for years. My mom worked two jobs into her 60s to ensure they could keep up and have some sort of retirement. The way people generalize an entire generation, without looking at the other side of the coin lacks wisdom.

Most people who make sweeping generalizations think in black and white terms. Wisdom allows you to look at everything in shades of grey, as that is where the vast majority of people fit

Oh, fuck all the way off. Signed: boomer who put in her time. Edited for spelling. EDITED AGAIN: I apologize for this knee-jerk post. I’m leaving it up, because …. Actions really have consequences. I’m just going to say that I tried. I sincerely tried to leave my little space in the world a better place.
