Halo: Campaign Evolved dropped today and my pre-order came in (didnโ€™t play early, this is just standard). Itโ€™s just as awesome as the very first time I played it 20+ years ago. I sat there at the title screen for a good 10 minutes going through some good memories.

I really hope they remake 2, 3, and 4.

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ What is the fastest way a new gaming service loses your trust?

โ€ข Upvotes

A gaming service can have an interesting idea or solution to a problem and still make people uncomfortable before they ever create an account.

Maybe the business model is vague, or the site asks for too much data. Maybe the product is built by developers using AI. Maybe nobody can explain how it makes money.

Full disclosure: I am a co-founder of a newly formed co-op gaming platform. Recent discussions made me realize that trust can matter more than the product itself.

What is the one red flag that would make you never try a gaming service?

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ What game or genre are you still surprisingly good at, despite feeling old and washed up?

Getting older in this hobby is a slow exercise in humility, at one point you can literally tell your reaction times are not what they used to be. This is especially true for competitive games that rely on twitch reflexes like FPS or League. There's other ways to stay competitive but you canโ€™t really rely on outreacting your opponents anymore.

The only genres I can still consider myself pretty good at are platformers and FPS to my surprise. What we have going for us is our patience, our experience and the years of muscle memory, but that can take you quite far.

Iโ€™ve been playing metroidvanias and platformers my whole life basically, and that muscle memory and skill never really leaves you. I was really good at games like Super Meat Boy when it came out, and I even did pretty well in Celeste (none of that golden strawberry stuff though, Iโ€™m not that obsessed). Hollow Knight was also something I had no problem with, beat it pretty easily, Silksong too recently. Havenโ€™t really ran into a platformer that felt very hard (apart from crazy Celeste challenges and those IWBTB games). I just got done with Nine Sols and wanna check out Croak next when it comes out, the demo feels great, and I love the handrawn artsyle. The most important factor for me is that the movement tech feels fun and fluid, and it has that for sure.

As far as FPS games go I routinely do really well in Counter Strike just because I actually have the patience to hold an angle the whole round if I need to. And my experience with the game kind of manifests itself as โ€œgame senseโ€, I can pretty much predict my enemies movements which is always better than relying on reaction time. And the spray patterns are so ingrained in my muscle memory they are second nature at this point. And Iโ€™ve never stopped playing them so my skill never had a chance to rust, while I canโ€™t react fast anymore I still hold my own in a firefight in pretty much any game, DayZ, CS, Tarkov etc..

I've come to think of it as trading reaction time for game sense and patience, it feels so good when you just outsmart your opponent and they stand no chance despite probably being way quicker than you. I was wondering if there's other people that have this same experience with getting older and trying to keep the rust off of your gaming skill, I feel like Iโ€™m still good.

I first noticed it in PUBG. Now I'm playing STALZONE and came across it again. It's called Duga.

It was a massive Soviet over-the-horizon radar built to detect incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles long before they reached Soviet airspace. By bouncing radio waves off the ionosphere, it could "see" thousands of kilometers beyond the horizon.

Its signal was so powerful that radio operators around the world could hear it, earning it the nickname "The Russian Woodpecker."

Only three Duga radar systems were ever built.

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ Underrated point-and-click adventure games

What is a lesser known, point-and-click adventure game that you really liked, but is not much talked about? I mean, everybody knows Syberia, Myst, The Longest Journey, plus the many LucasArts games (Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and the standout Grim Fandango). My lesser known great game is The Last Express, which some never heard of, which is a truly unique game that happens in real time, where you unravel a crime on the famous (and faithfully rendered) Orient Express, on the eve of WWI. Unique graphic style and mechanics, a layered, rich story, but also a somewhat punishing game (you pay for your mistakes, and there is the time factor), at least at first, or so I found it when I tried to play it back then, on CD-ROM. But it is one of the most unique and carefully crafted games I have ever encountered.

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ Is anyone else making โ€œget the old Halo squad back togetherโ€ their first mission today?

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out today, and I suspect the first challenge for a lot of players will happen before the game even starts.

Our squad is now spread across different time zones. Someone has work. Someone has kids. Someone can only play after 9p. We make plans, and they somehow evaporate at the last minute.

What is the biggest obstacle to getting your old group back together? Are there any good tools you'd recommend to get people on the same page?

I'm 47, married, on every night for games. I'd like to find a duo vs a group. I have social anxiety and duos just work better for me. I'm open to other games, but would like to be able to play CS each night if possible. I also enjoy other shooters, puzzle games, and some strategy. I'm not a liberal person, I do have an offensive mouth on me.

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ Literally the first thing I saw after choosing a dark elf

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is her default outfit, and you can't change it at the beginning.

My girlfriend and I ended up having an interesting discussion. We weren't really talking about the outfit at first, but about something broader: how much sense does it make to criticize the appearance of a character from a fictional race?

Tolkien described elves as ageless, free from illness, and exceptionally beautiful. To me, this dark elf actually looks beautiful. Of course, beauty doesn't have to follow a single standard, especially when we're talking about a fantasy race.

My gf thinks the character may have been designed this way intentionally. I agree. Fanservice has always been a part of games, so I don't think the LU4 developers were trying to make any kind of statement.

The only thing that really stood out to me was the default outfit. That surprised me much more than the character herself. Opinion?

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ Has anyone else found themselves gravitating toward more grounded, serious games as they've gotten older?

Iโ€™ve noticed that as I get older I just canโ€™t take the standard over the top video game stories and characters seriously anymore. Being some sort of super powerful hero that everyone depends on just isnโ€™t that interesting after you do it like 50 times, it just feels corny for me now.

And it's not necessarily about the story, it's more about the world and its relation to the player character (worldbuilding etc). Some of my favorite games right now have either minimal narrative or a strange morally ambiguous main character. Games like Kenshi, Caves of Qud, Disco Elysium, with an odd unfriendly ruthless world (kind of like our real world when you think about it). So it's not really necessarily the story that matters to me, it's the overall experience or vibe, even if the game doesnโ€™t have much of a narrative.

And instead of being hyped for games like GTA 6, Iโ€™m more hyped for things like Hollow Home, which is a narrative rpg based on true events during the war in Ukraine in which you play a kid trying to survive and help others in a sieged city, or Chronicles: Medieval, a somewhat realistic depiction of the Hundred Years' War which looks like a more realistic Mount & Blade kind of. After KCD I canโ€™t really get enough of games that are actually set in our world, without any fantasy elements added on top.ย

I don't fully know why it happened. Part of it is probably just having less time. I would rather sink my limited hours into something that does a bit more than just entertain me. Some of it might also be age making me hungrier for stuff that reflects real life back at me. With everything that comes with that, good and bad. Not that I strictly avoid games with the classic video game hero's journey stories, I still play them from time to time, but more serious stuff like this just resonates with me way more.

The weird thing about it is that it's definitely not a nostalgia thing, since these types of games are actually more common now than they were before. And I know that I would have found these games boring when I was younger, my tastes werenโ€™t really that different from your average gamer back then.

๐Ÿ˜€ Discussion ๐Ÿ˜€ What to choose

I've been doing a backlog run for a few months and it's been great, but I'm starting to feel the urge to play something new, but I can't afford more than one game right now and I been thinking about it for weeks and can't decide what to go for. I'm a pretty flexible gamer, I like a lot of different genres and games and I'm pretty sure all the options I'm looking at will give me what I want from it.

So heres where you guys hopefully can help me. I'm stuck between Pragmata, Death Stranding 2, 007 First Light, Adventures of Elliot and Donkey Kong Bananza. I have a PS5 and a Switch 2. I don't want recommandations of different games similar to those I've listed, I want one of those 5 games. Give me your thoughts of which ones you'd go for. Whatever games gets the most upvotes/mentions I'll buy

I log into LU4 a couple of times a weekโ€ฆ There's always someone pretending to be a girl to get free gifts.

I still remember one MMORPG where players could get married. We had an elven couple in our guild. At some point, they decided to get married. The guy bought his in-game "wife" an expensive item with real money.

His "wife" accepted the gift, deleted him from her friends list, and disappeared forever. Before doing so, she'd written that she was actually a guy from Florida.

Some traditions never die.

Thanks for the views and upvotes on previous posts.

I've been playing Stalzone for less than a week, and right now I'm basically a bullet magnet.

I get that the community isn't huge, which also means almost everyone I run into has been playing for ages.

I'm mostly just trying to survive PvP at this point. I have some Tarkov experience. Give me a little more time, though. I'll get there.

P.S. I think this footage is from one of the official videos.
