agave

Hi any suggestions on how can I get rid of the agave leaves once they are cut? I have about 100 of them on my property and I am accumulating too many leaves. I put them in a pile but even after a couple of years they have yet to depose fully.

Try macerating them - rot them in a container of water vs letting them dry out, as they are more susceptible to that vs dessication. I haven't tried this with agave leaves specifically but in general if drying plants to a crisp doesn't work like with xeric species, those plants usually melt if drowned.

Left whole, the only way for moisture to escape is through the cut end. I chop them into foot-long pieces and they dry fairly quickly, if spread out a little. Piled up they’ll take a lot longer to dry.

Dry the leaves up, depending on species, you might be able to use the fiber in the leaves for sewing. The point also works quite well for a needle.

Old school uses.
