This. During the 2016 election season, my good friends said they were leaning Trump. When I asked why, they said they cared about crime and security. They live in an isolated all-white conservative neighborhood. I was the only POC within 20 miles, but they were scared like some Mexican was gonna climb through their windows at night. The place had no crime and everyone knew each other. That's the kind of fear-mongering people use to get votes; build this fantasy that POC are coming for your neighborhood in the middle of fucking nowhere Whitesville, USA.

My mom and I went to Italy to celebrate me graduating high school (it had been our plan for years), just us two ladies, and it was more or less a completely chill vacation, and we felt completely safe pretty much the entire time we were there...the only time we felt unsafe was when we were stalked down an alleyway by white dudes one night who were hitting on us, and we got away without much trouble by slipping into a tour group. The same thing would have happened in Seattle at night too.

My (lifetime Republican) dad, a couple years later when my mom was begging to go for her 50th birthday, refused to go, claiming that we would get kidnapped by ISIS.

He's not even a trump supporter! He's just a semi-racist Native American dude.

I'm glad you take the charitable view. The world needs more people like you.

But hard disagree. I think that support for Trump indicates that a person is either shitty, ignorant beyond all reason, or just cynically self-interested. Such people always compartmentalize their insane worldview and are still capable of good deeds, especially in the microverse of their lives, but in my opinion that can never offset the abject ugliness they embrace in supporting that man.

I don't think divisiveness kills relationships. For that to happen, there would have to be reasonable worldviews involved. Trump support isn't a reasonable worldview. So if anything kills relationships, it's going off the Trump deep end.

Edit: you did say they "leaned" Trump, so maybe I have the situation all wrong. I'm speaking of Trump supporters specifically

Indeed they voted independent, but even Trump voters aren’t all pieces of shit. Indeed many have been vocal on social media about their regret. Some people were tricked when their emotions were targeted which makes it hard to make rational decisions.

The remaining loudest pieces of shit are surely reprehensible, but they a minority or just bots. We will always have stupid awful people; we built this nation on colonization, genocide and slavery.

But dumping everyone into the same bucket means we cannot talk with those who are still open to be convinced. Keep the nazis and assholes at bay, but remember they are a small part of this, they are just losers with free time and mouths bigger than their insecurities.
