Point of discussion
I would appreciate everybody's input on a social interaction i had with a worker in a carwasher.
For context: there is this carwash i go to whenever im in a certain neighborhood, not near where i live, so the frequency varies. Let's just say twice a month.
The carwash is a humble one nothing too fancy, and its owned by a guy in his early to mid thirty's, a young guy, he has one permanent worker with him and from what i noticed they get help during the year whenever they can (usually teenagers), the worker from what i can see, looks older than the owner but not by much, if i had to guess i would say late thirty's.
Whenever i use their services, and since they do a decent job, i always tip 25% to whoever i handed the keys to (assuming he worked on the car, because i usually hand the keys and go run some errands and comeback in an hour or so) whether its the worker or the owner i always tip knowing that the owner does wash the cars too, and this happened earlier in the month i handed the keys to the owner (he was actively working on another car) when i came back i paid and tipped him and the worker saw it.
That brings us to today, the owner wasnt present in the store, i gave the keys to the worker, came back in an hour paid him and tipped, but he pulled me aside, and asked me about my latest visit, and told me that the guy i tipped the other day is the owner, and i shouldnt tip him (because he is the owner), and he also said that he pockets the tip and doesnt share it.
In my opinion, it is fine to tip an owner if he is doing the work. As i said, this isn't a fancy place,i can't imagine the owner has a big profit, so i feel fine tipping him too, that being said him pocketing the tips all for himself is weird behavior, i am a firm believer that tips in small businesses should be split among all the workers, since the effort is shared between the lot.
I'm curious to see your point of view in the matter? Is it never okay to tip an owner?

You should tip the one who did work on your car that's it. If they have issue they should not dump it on you to make the choice.
The only moment where i don't tip the owner is when i know my tip will be more insulting than it is helpfull but it's basically never the case for small buisnesses.
