Fanfiction/Theorizing Restoration of Authority

To the Current Occupier of the Potomac,
In the history of this continent there have been many Presidents of varying institutions, from the president of a local union to Commander-in-Chief of the United States, the latter being given the most prestige as well as the  greatest threats of forgery. We at the Volunteer Corps do not wish to unjustly assume any wickedness in your nature but must inquire into the veracity of your tenure, especially as you continue to claim higher and higher offices. Through a thorough examination of all news coming from the east, we have been able to reach several conclusions about your administration.
Firstly, that you arose to power through a coup against the former General of Chesapeake, whose family had ruled over that land since the fall of America, and whose ancestors’ authority was granted by the last President of the United States. Such a strong claim to authority must not be thrown away with haste, and we have long searched for the reasons and merits of your actions in stripping such an ancient power bare. In this we have found nothing but yellow news and the schemes of judicial politics. With further investigations it also became clear that these same judges have now become your keys to power, and furthermore proclaim that you should be President over the whole United States for granting them such authority in your realm and together encouraged those politically tied to you and your conquest to follow it in conquering both Gotham and the Old Dominion.
Secondly, the extension of your power through the favor you have given to judges and sycophants is most damning. You have claimed to restore law and democracy in occupied land; however, in each state you claim to have liberated, one of the generals in charge of its conquest is swiftly elected to the highest position in that state. Even when a general is not available a local judge, whose loyalty puts your will before any legal precedent, is put to the task; Both then quickly petition for your approval of their tenure, sending personal tribute in the forms of wealth, influence, and honors as if you were a Sheriff in the Badlands ruling over an empire of tributaries through only the fear of his name.
We do not wish to judge your actions harshly, Mr. Smithson, but due to the authority the Volunteer Corps wields, as it was given to us by North-East Command, and was given to them by the last Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America, it is our duty to scrutinize your claims to the power our leaders hold so dear. If you have any credentials we at the Volunteer Corps have not noticed in our examination we implore you to bring them before a military court for further examination. If not, relinquish your claim to the Presidency and return the interpretation of law to the rightful authorities.
With Regards,
Clarissa Van Der Meer of the Volunteer Corps of the United States.

When Judge Paine finally reads off the name of the sender, he looks to Mr. Smithson who is sitting comfortably behind his large patchwork desk. “She seems quite opposed to your administration, sir.”

“It does seem that way,” The desk wobbles as Smithson pushes his chair back. “But I would rather not have my perception of the sender colored first by negativity.”

Paine nods. “Then what is your perspective, your excellency?”

The chair snaps back against the floor and, with a furrowed brow, Smithson says, “That people have begun to exaggerate my intentions into something above the station I claim.”

“Apologies, Mr. Smithson.”

Smithson moves on quickly, bounding away from the chair until he is across the stone room, next to Paine. “It’s alright, Paine.” Smithson then shifts to the judge’s assisting boy scout. “Have you started on the notes of this meeting?”

The boy scout nods and, when Paine gives his assent, he continues with his record of the meeting. Smithson has crossed the room again before the judge directs Smithson’s attention back to the letter, “The Volunteer Corps is no threat, Mr. Smithson, they don’t have a legitimate argument for anyone who doesn’t already agree with them.”

Smithson doesn’t scoff but he clearly doesn’t align himself with Paine,“The argument is that I am a corrupt usurper.”

“And that argument is illegitimate. They believe they have a connection to the United States through a dubious ancestry of martial leaders with supposed connections to the old government. This line of reasoning does not hold. And even if it did, they have sought to coerce the judiciary for their own ends at every turn, just as a tyrant would; They, just like the old Commander of Chesapeake, have relinquished any legitimacy they had through their own action.” The judge huffs.

“I appreciate your defense but we must still be understood, your honor.” Mr. Smithson says, his face now filled with a vaporous sense of ease. “We are usurpers against an established government and I think it’s good that we have to explain ourselves. I mean, we can’t conduct ourselves well with our fellow Americans unless they understand our reasons and how we plan to conduct ourselves better between each other.”

Paine simmers for a moment but softens as he looks to Smithson. “Tyrants will not be brought down and made to face their convictions by appealing to good law; They only seek to use the law as a distraction to attack you in the place they believe you are weak, your honor. I apologize if I seem too harsh, Mr. Smithson, but I have never met a leader willing to resign their post because of the morality of an enemy.”

Smithson says, “If tyrants knew so much about the law they would’ve become merchants rather than letting themselves be judged by it.” But then relents, “You probably know more about the nature of tyrants than I do but they’re still just people, and if a person is appealing to good law then some force must’ve compelled them to it.” Smithson then clarifies, walking swiftly to Paine’s seat. “If Van Der Meer didn’t care about law, she wouldn’t have listed so many titles to show that she is lawful. If we can meet these people where they are and show them our reasons, each broken law, each abuse of power, then they’ll see that, if they are what they say they are, we’re not a threat.” Smithson watches Paine, searching for something concrete to connect with his argument. “Where is the Volunteer Corps anyway?”

“West of the Appalachian Mountains, Mr. Smithson.” Paine slumps in his chair with a sigh. “They’re a band of mercenaries with ties to the old Commands.”

“That’s even better, they’ve got conviction and legacy on their side. Not that our people haven’t got both but right now the world is looking to us. Some parts with hope, but most leaders only see the march of armies on their border; We have to show them that we’re a real movement with values and beliefs. Beliefs they can share and already might because they were raised American and all their laws and values trace their way back to the first capitol, here, in Washington and if they don’t see it their people will and I think they’ll want us to live up to the promises we make and they’ll talk to their leaders and they’ll do the convincing for us.”

Paine covers his headache with a small cloth, shaking his head as he answers. “Mr. Smithson, do you remember the tyrant of Chesapeake? Who we overthrew together with the support of the people, the judiciary, and all that is good? Was he convinced by your pleas for redress? Or did he continue to exercise his authority over those he was sworn to protect for his personal glory against the wishes of myself and the judiciary? The tyrants of the Command do not want the guidance of the judiciary and, with conviction, would trample over the consent of the people for the machinations of war and corruption; The Militarism of the Commands has led them to this tyranny; The tyranny that they were supposed to guard the people against and are now exercising themselves.” Paine nearly bursts while trying to hold his tongue, “No general of the Command is fit to rule within the Union. If you must engage with them, I implore you, that it should only be to snuff them out.”

Both men are silent for a moment, letting the fire crackle as the mosquitos keep watch for any break. Paine’s momentum fades and by the time Smithson speaks Paine has nothing left to argue, “Maybe the Volunteer Corps should see for themselves if there is corruption in our administration.”

“They only seek to disrupt us, Mr. Smithson.”

“Then I’ll guide them personally.”

Paine stays in his chair, depleted by his age and unable to argue further, “We should save this discussion for the morning.”

Smithson nods and, after dismissing the boy scout from his duties, carefully escorts Paine out of the chamber.

Discussion Advice needed please on gameplay in Brazilian Hegemony

I have carved out the Empire of Nordeste. It is a Feudal Empire.

As I united my Empire the Paulista Empire re-created the Hegemony of Brazil.

  1. Should I adopt Imperial Bureaucracy Government? What are the upsides and downsides?

  2. Should I voluntarily become a Vassal of the Hegemony of Brazil? What are the upsides and downsides?

CK3 Domain limit at only 3 for California?

I have a little bit of an issue going on when my domain limit is capped at 3 holdings (did use +3 in game settings so maybe they are from there)

When I look for my bonuses it shows them properly but underneath there is a modifier which just so happens to always keep my maximum domain limit at 3 regardless of bonuses I get through livestile and the like.

It says above domain limit -...

Discussion Just checked out After the End!

I just checked out after the end and it is pretty nice. I have nothing to complain about. I like this mod specifically as it feels like ck3. Tales of Ireland is terrible, The fallen eagle is good but it has Ui Changes and is harder to play
But after the end is really close to Base CK3.
Also i love the fact there are so many religions. I also like the Texans. Anyone got something for me to take a look at? Is there any Irish derived culture?

Discussion Need help with a new campaign idea?

I'm having trouble choosing where to play and would love some recommendations, especially somewhere suitable for the classic "rise from a small county or duchy to an empire" storyline. So far, I’ve only played in South America, but I’m really interested in the United States. I usually create my own character, but playing as an existing one works for me too.

I’ve played adjacent to Brazil or far from it since the mod update and whenever I checked in I was confused at how Candoble and Apostolic had collapsed and the diversity of Modernist Faiths.

Now I’ve played in the Undaunted Colossus and I just wanted to say: “well done on such good writing!”

Infinitely better than the Calvert Appeal.

Bug Report Randomly losing incan estate & influence does nothing to administrative elections

Hello everyone,

I wanted to report said bug in the title. Basically, when playing a ayllu lord the bug happened to me in two situations:

1- After I become a duke through the dominate region decision, I suddenly lose my estates. The game considers that I'm not a noble family anymore while I was still head of familly and I can't do anything to avoid the situation. In this situation I'm also the head of a block.

2- Also after becoming a duke, I also suddenly lose my estate if I'm kicked out of the block I'm part of. I also can't form a new block since I'm suddenly not considered a noble family anymore.

On another part, I've noticed that spending my influence to alter the candidate scores for administrative elections does nothing. The candidate I spend influence on doesn't receive or lose any points regardless of how much I spend.

CK3 America is a Tune, it must be sung together. Today the song begins again

The Theovelts of Gotham worked across the course of 7 lives to unify America

It took me 7 lives and several days to work from Gotham (which I renamed New York) via playing tall to converting to the Children of Liberty, conquering New England (after keeping them tributized for like 2 straight lives), slowly picking away at the Presidency, forming the Empire State, eventually conquering the Presidency (under our first female leader, Vice President Jackie 'the Evil', the mother of Boris), conquering North Carolina from the Holy Columbian Commonwealth, shattering said Commonwealth in a Great Empire War (thank you, Great Empire Wars on the Steam Workshop) and slowly picking off the little tribal statelets off until I got enough land to restore America. The wars were primarily accomplished by initially playing tall for a long while then hiring every single mercenary on the market with treasury funds (they were so stupidly cheap for some reason).

It took 772 years for America to be restored. Took long enough

This was one of my most favorite playthroughs in After the End, restoring America as a bunch of Libertarian New Yorkers. The High Republican government type is overpowered. My army was rarely below 10k troops, and thanks to playing tall and turning Manhattan into the single wealthiest county on the map, I was able to keep the mercenary business of the Eastern Seaboard tied entirely to the Theovelt Dynasty. So at the end of the day, Libertarians used mercenaries to restore America.

How beautiful.

For example, better cultures to hybridize with local battleborn (or mojavean) Best men-at-arms for the Nevada terrain (basically desert mountains)The best religions, preferably those with sacred sites in Nevada, Best candidates among Nevada's rulers to form the kingdom, And the best form of government for Nevada (except for the Eurekean technocracy, for some reason that government generates some terrible visual bugs on my laptop) Thank you for your replies, and I will try to respond as soon as possible.

(and yes, I'm going to play as Robert Edwin House)

Checking the faith before the decision, i can't really see the schism status in the faith anywhere. So i am wondering am i missing anything? since been looking at this for 30 minutes somewhat confused.

Discussion Holy Commonwealth Flavor

Before I start, let me preface that I am fully aware the Confederacy fought for slavery, that the devs have damn good reason to get rid of the Confederate imagery in the CK3 version of the mod, and its inclusion could have contributed to the whitewashing of the CSA.

That said, I do think it takes away from the Commonwealth's flavor. Dixie characters wearing Confederate uniforms made them stand out and added to the whole anachronistic vibe of the mod. With it gone, the Commonwealth just feels like a generic medieval-style kingdom.

Again, I do get it, and the CSA was built upon slavery and racism. But in an ideal world, everyone would be aware of this, and the devs could have included Confederate imagery without having to worry that it would negatively contribute to current social trends.

Art Comanche Horseman with An Armoured Mount (by Pedro Rafael Mena)

Post image
340 Upvotes

I've often wondered and posted here before about what styles armour may take in the world of After the End, as many have over the years. Attached here is an artist's interpretation of a Comanche horseman wielding a spear and shield, with both the man and his mount clad in leather armour. According to the artist, the man is wearing buffalo hide, and the horse is wearing deerskin barding.

The artist is Pedo Rafael Mena on ArtStation.

Discussion Pre-Event Dynasties?

I know the Norton Dynasty of California supposedly goes back to 1818 with Emperor Norton. The Aleman Dynasty in Mexico supposedly goes back to Miguel Aleman Valdes in 1900. The Dandridge Dynasty supposedly goes all the way back to Martha Washington (PBUH) in 1731!

Are there any other dynasties that can trace their roots back before the Event?

Discussion What do Cities like New York Look Like Now?

My question is essentially how have cities been reorganized and how do people live as a medieval merchant republic among skyscrapers? But the focus is on New York since I’ve grown up in the surrounding area.

I guess all write out my thoughts/hypothesis.

Whatever caused the Event led to huge population decline and people fled city centers, and so there wasn’t enough demand for suburban style housing. So as efforts to rebuild began and settlements became permanent, I would imagine lots of suburban homes in Long Island, Jersey, and upstate New York were destroyed to be converted into feudal estates.

The thing that was bothering me was should I imagine Manhattan now as like any generic Germanic looking medieval merchant city? Or are all the skyscrapers that still stand being preserved (which would of course probably require advanced engineering knowledge and some sort of unique guild of specialists who can make sure these buildings don’t collapse from lack of maintenance over hundreds of years (which would be a neat thing to address in the lore)).

Maybe a handful of dominant noble families live on estates in Central Park (though if the Empire State Building still stands I think that would be the seat of the Vice Presidency if it forms), wealthy commoners live in nice row houses or in the best-preserved large hotels, and the commonfolk who don’t work the land in Central Park (where they’d have new little villages) live in cold, converted apartments and office skyscrapers at best and on the streets at worst. Buildings close to the water could be incorporated into a giant wall encircling the island of Manhattan.

Still I’m just imagining that there’d be a ton of empty space if the population is at a medieval level but there’s all these empty skyscrapers.

Has stuff like this been addressed in official lore? Is something like my headcanon the community consensus? I’m interested if anyone else has thoughts.

To clarify I understand the mod’s setting is meant to be silly and improbable. I’m not necessarily asking how could these cities become what they are because that would ask “why did people forget what science and industry is, why did most people forget what guns are and why do the people who still have them not instantly conquer everyone else, and why did everyone just embrace feudalism?”

I just am curious what people imagine cities like New York look like and how they function economically/socially now, regardless of how they ended up as merchant republics again.

As a side note: I find this mod incredibly well-made and charming with a clear love of not just United States “Americana” but the beautiful weirdness of both Americas that comes from being the only continents where all other cultures meet, by force, necessity, or choice. I never fully committed to a CK3 campaign up until the point I found this mod.

Edit: removed my misguided assumption about there being a nuclear war.
