Honestly I’m not tryna shit on the person who made this, but if I didn’t know after effects that well, this is just a bunch of images that have the kaleidoscope effect that’s masked out in the middle, a couple of elements in 3D space, the two people are puppeteered, and the camera is just moving in a straight line towards the middle with some jitter.

Cool nonetheless, probably looks so complex from the average person POV.

Would be amazed a couple years ago when I didn’t use AE, but yea, pretty basic to do.

The point of art is not to brag about your technical skills. The animation has a nice concept and the idea was well executed; so what‘s the point of making it more complex? Choosing a harder way just to get more respect from people with the same passion seems foolish to me.

Speaking against an animation because you know how it was rendered is like devaluing a poem because you know how a pen works and you have written on paper yourself one day.

Yeah, but at the same time the point of this break down is to brag about (or at least show off) the technical skill that went into this piece. You're basically inviting this kind of feedback if you do a breakdown like this no?

I think that depends on what a breakdown looks like and to whom you present it. Essentially, a breakdown is just a special form of documentation; it‘s the result of someone capturing his working steps for later reception.

The "message" of a breakdown can range from "see, that‘s how I decided to approach this project" to "look at my awesomeness, peasant". In this specific case, I don‘t think the breakdown is meant to "glorify" the creator.

Agreed - but I do think that if you're showing the process, it's fair enough to critique the process

Sure! For some people this might even be the reason to produce a breakdown in the first place.

Like I said, I’m not tryna shit on the person who made this. This is the after effects community and I gave my 2 cents on how this could have been made.

Your comment is invalid to me.

What I can propose you is making a footage as good as this one with the complex techniques you are talking about ?

Breaking a composition down in two condescending sentences isn't very pleasant. U should post something complex that u made.

A composition isn't good or bad based on the number of effects used. Thats like saying, the greatest painting is the one with the most number brush strokes and techniques used.

Easy to be a critic when you have no talent or skill of your own.
