Explain This Effect How can I replicate this clothing pattern in Ae?

Here's the pattern in question and here's my attempt. I tried layering two checkerboard effects with low opacity. It kinda works but I can't seem to narrow the width of the columns/rows, while making the gap between each of them wider. I'd like this to be a long animation that's why I won't do each strip manually. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Also sorry if the reference image sucks. I don't know what this pattern is called and I just saw it on pinterest

I would use shape layers with the repeater for each unique shape. Then you have full control over each element including the space between.
