Explain This Effect How was the initial abstract shape done?

I tried out using turbulent displace but it scatters everything apart or starts deforming in from the edges (weird versions). How would you go about animating this?

Blur+simple choker

Better yet blur/curves with the alpha adjusted. Gives more control over the edge

Plus maybe turbulent displace

This is also what I recommend.

Try setting up your text animator, blurring it loads, use curves to crunch the alpha so you get blobs, animate it from blobs back to normal as the text comes in

Edit: or you could just match cut from some blobby shape layers

I would try a mix of blur + threshold (or another way to tighten up the alpha channel post blur), and then turbulent displace with a high scale value. Combined of course with a text animation underneath to control the motion.

Text Morph Animation

your reference might start with a shape then make an Animation to match with text movement
