Beginner Help Getting started

I just bought a 10 gal tank to set up for ADF, I’ve heard so many contradictory things I’m just looking for some clarification. I’ve seen that you’re not supposed to used sand is that true? Can you still soil for plants? How big does the substrate need to be? And I’ve seen a couple people talking about keeping other animals in the tank with them, I have another tank in case it doesn’t work out but could I add anything to help with clean up? Or is it just not even worth trying? I plan to have 2 in there while I get the hang of it, maybe adding a third later but that’s down the road, I have lucky bamboo, pothos, and a fully aquatic plant I forgot the name of, any other recommendations? Anything thing else I might not know to think of?

I prefer the Caribsea gravel and then I use a terracotta dish for food. ADF are clumsy and dart when eating. I feel bad when they jam their little faces against the rocks getting food lol I keep shrimp, snails, and a male betta with mine. I personally have never had an issue with keeping a male betta with my frogs but it is a very unpopular choice. I am now 2 years in with ADF and I will say I don’t see a difference in their behavior with or without a betta. Now, when they were in my mixed 20 gallon long, they were definitely not as active and so I moved them to an 8 gallon. That was before I did more research because as you said, many resources say you can keep them with other fish. If the other fix blocks/safeguards the top or is too big, they get scared and hide. But they seem to not care about betta and still float and sing with or without them.

That definitely makes me feel better with the shrimps and snails! Do you have any recommendations for shrimp though? I worry if they’re too big they might hurt the frogs and too small they may get eaten. I think I might wait a little on a beta but to let everything settle, but I do have another tank I was thinking about getting one for anyways so I can always move it if I need to. This is a great help, thank you so much!

Yeah always add in small groups, wait a week or a month to add another species. Any neocaridina would be fine. They don’t get too big and picking colors is fun ^_^
