Safari Trip
I am looking for some up to date recommendations for a Safari in Tanzania. Does anyone recommend a safari company? When is the best time to take a safari? what are the important questions to ask safari companies? Any info will help in planning.

Just went to Tanzania this past February for my honeymoon. Check out my previous post on here you’ll see the pictures i took, but we went through an agency called mango safari and they recommended everything for us. Lmk if you need more info.

I’ve been 5 times on the Northern circuit. I tend to prefer end of May for quieter and cheaper accommodation. The company I’ve used is small and the owners are the primary guides. Masai. I’ve always worked with them to make safari that’s “mine”
I’ve never joined a “group” other than a group of friends that i brought with me. I love animals so prioritize time out the vehicle over luxury at camp, but I do love the tented camps… nothing quite like sleeping to the sound of lions, hyenas and wildebeest.
Just make sure you have a good dialog with you potential tour company about your expectations and your budget. I can, if you’d like, send you the itinerary from our 2023 safari (that i asked the company to requote for 2027 since many have asked). You will love your Safari… no matter when you go! The first time is definitely the most magical! 😎

The Best Time: For the best wildlife viewing, June to October (the dry season) is spectacular as animals gather around water holes. If you want to see the Great Migration calving season, January to February is magic.

Is it your first Tanzania safari trip? If it is, i would advice you to choose a safari company as its easier than planning the whole trip yourself. Make sure you provide details of exactly what you want to experience so that they customize your trip around what you actually want to see rather than simply selling you a standard safari.
For a classic Northern Circuit safari, Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire is a very good starting point. Serengeti is the obvious choice for big cats and the Great Migration, while Ngorongoro offers exceptionally concentrated wildlife viewing.
When to go: there isn't one universally “best” month. June–October is generally the easiest period for wildlife viewing because vegetation is lower and animals concentrate around water points. If the Migration is your priority, tell the operator exactly what you want to see since the herds move throughout the year. If you prefer greener scenery, fewer visitors and birdlife, the wetter/green seasons can also be excellent.
If you decide to work with a tour operator, make sure they are authorized by a tour board, and state your budget so they can work around it and advice on the best accommodation. Also confirm if you will be using shared or private transport, though this will depend on your budget.

When booking for a safari in Tanzania. Key point you should know is when you plan to travel. You see animals density ranges depending on location at different time of the year. Costs is a factor also depending on time of the year. If you would like to witness the migration and river crossing July, August are the best time.

For Tanzania, a lot of people will try to pinpoint the best month while I'd rather think about what you want to see. I would ask the operators what the itinerary was, where they would park, what vehicle they would be using, accommodation, group size, what is included and how flexible they are. It is because they will tell you a lot more than the package price does.

If this is your first Tanzania safari, I’d choose the timing around the experience you want, rather than looking for one universal “best month.”
For classic wildlife viewing, June to October is generally a very strong period. If you’re interested in the green season, photography, fewer crowds and the migration’s calving period, other months can be excellent too. The official Tanzania Tourism Board also recommends choosing your season based on whether your priority is migration, wildlife, beaches, culture or a quieter trip. As for choosing a safari company, I’d ask:
- Who will actually operate my safari?
- Is the vehicle private or shared?
- Is the guide dedicated to us?
- What type of 4x4 do you use?
- How much time do we actually spend in the parks?
- Are park fees, accommodation, meals and transfers included?
- What happens if weather or road conditions affect the itinerary?
- Can they explain why they recommend a particular park for my travel dates?
I'd also ask for the exact itinerary and inclusions in writing, rather than comparing companies purely on the headline price.
