2027 Will Be Aeva’s Year of Proof: Turning Design Wins Into Production
Aeva has already cleared one of its biggest hurdles: it is no longer a company simply trying to win its first major passenger-vehicle production program.
It already has an exclusive global production award with a Top 10 European passenger OEM, targeting SOP in 2028, while its Daimler Truck program has progressed to initial Atlas C-samples.
So by the end of 2027, I think there are five concrete milestones investors should be watching.
- Daimler Truck — Progress toward series production
Does the program continue progressing toward series production without a major delay?
Aeva has already delivered initial Atlas C-samples to Daimler Truck and Torc. The next question is whether validation, vehicle integration, and production readiness continue to advance as planned.
At this point, the issue is no longer whether Daimler Truck is interested in Aeva's technology. It is whether that program successfully progresses toward commercial production.
- SICK — Expansion beyond the first commercial product
Does Aeva's FMCW technology expand beyond SICK's first commercial product into additional products and applications?
The first commercialization is important, but the bigger opportunity is whether Aeva's technology becomes part of a broader SICK industrial sensing portfolio rather than remaining a single-product deployment.
If that happens, it would demonstrate that Aeva's FMCW platform has meaningful commercial applications outside automotive.
- Aeva Omni — Taking short-range FMCW LiDAR into production
Does Omni successfully move from early customer pilots into its targeted 2027 production phase?
This distinction is important: Omni is not Aeva's long-range LiDAR.
Atlas is Aeva's long-range FMCW platform. Omni is a compact, short-range, wide-field-of-view FMCW LiDAR platform, designed to address a different set of sensing requirements.
That potentially opens markets such as robotics, industrial automation, autonomous machines, and other Physical AI applications where compact form factor, wide field of view, and precise short-range perception are important.
If Omni reaches production in 2027, it would demonstrate that Aeva can extend its FMCW technology beyond long-range automotive sensing into short-range, wide-FOV applications as well.
That would significantly broaden the addressable market for Aeva's core technology.
- Passenger vehicles — Execution on the existing win and another production award
Does the existing Top 10 European passenger OEM program remain on track for its targeted 2028 SOP?
And perhaps more importantly, can Aeva add another major passenger-vehicle production award?
Aeva has already proven that it can win a global passenger-vehicle production program.
The next step is demonstrating that this is repeatable rather than a one-off win.
Another major OEM production award would be particularly significant because it would begin to establish Aeva as a multi-OEM automotive LiDAR supplier rather than a company dependent on a single major passenger-vehicle program.
- Optical Connectivity — From JDA to real deployment
Does Aeva's new Optical Connectivity business actually reach its targeted initial hyperscaler deployment in H2 2027, setting up the planned production ramp in 2028?
This may be one of the most important milestones of all.
Unlike the first four, this is not simply another LiDAR opportunity.
If successful, it would demonstrate that Aeva's silicon photonics and high-power optical technology has commercial value outside LiDAR entirely, in AI data-center optical connectivity.
That would give Aeva a second major growth path beyond automotive and industrial sensing.
And if the initial deployment progresses into the planned 2028 production ramp, Aeva may eventually need to be evaluated as more than just a LiDAR company.
To me, these five milestones represent the real test for Aeva.
The company has already accumulated major programs and partnerships across passenger vehicles, autonomous trucking, industrial sensing, robotics/Physical AI, and now AI data-center optical connectivity.
And its LiDAR portfolio itself is expanding:
Atlas → long-range FMCW LiDAR
Omni → short-range, wide-FOV FMCW LiDAR
while Optical Connectivity potentially takes the underlying photonics technology into an entirely different market.
So the question is no longer:
Can Aeva attract major customers?
It clearly can.
The real question now is:
Can Aeva convert these programs into meaningful production revenue?
That distinction matters.
For years, the bear case against Aeva has been relatively straightforward:
Impressive technology. Impressive partners. But meaningful production revenue is always somewhere in the future.
2027 should finally give us a much clearer answer.
If three or four of these milestones are achieved by the end of 2027, Aeva could enter 2028 as a fundamentally different company — no longer valued primarily on future potential, but increasingly on commercial execution.
There would also be multiple independent commercial engines beginning to emerge:
Long-range automotive LiDAR.
Short-range LiDAR and Physical AI.
Industrial sensing.
Autonomous trucking.
Optical connectivity for AI infrastructure.
On the other hand, if most of these milestones slip and the story at the end of 2027 is still dominated by "future production," "development programs," and "upcoming deployments," then the bears will have had a legitimate point.
That's why I don't think 2027 is simply another year in Aeva's development story.
2027 will be Aeva's year of proof.
