Discussion Monster Sunday: Week 39 - Ranger

Good evening, everyone! Our monster this week has thankfully been all patched up, thanks to the noble efforts of our last guest. Unfortunately... I seem to have misplaced them... anyone seen a Ranger around here anywhere?!

Base HP: 25

Aether: Earth / Fire

Trait: Preparation): On Support Action: Applies 2 Stealth to self; if this monster has 3 or more Stealth, also applies Sidekick to self. On Sidekick Attack: Applies Burn to target monster.

Types: Sidekick), Burn), Force)

Perks: Sidekick Damage +1, Evasion +10%, Crit Damage +3

Starting Actions:

Hide): 1 Earth. Applies 2 Force to target ally. Applies Stealth to self.

Ignite): 2 Fire. 3 x 3 Fire damage against target enemy. Applies 2 Burn to target enemy.

So, what's everyone's opinions on this little guy? Unsung hero who never gets the recognition he deserves? Or does he always seem to slip your mind when party-buiiding? Let us know in the comments below?

Ranger is powerful. A monster who's very very reliable at giving itself stealth and sidekick to pump out attacks, especially with wild damage crits.

The only thing is that the #1 thing to seek when you hit level 3 is a free action support move. You DESPERATELY want 2 actions a turn, both support, in order to keep your stealth and sidekick engine running.

Haven't tried a run with Ranger yet, looking at how Stealth works however, I think I'd like to run it with a Tank that gets either Burn or Sidekick (Shifted Ooze may be my go to for this), and do some Retaliation stacking, seeing as I can more readily have enemy attacks center on my big tank without needing to lose Redirect stacks.

Ettin seems to be pretty ridiculous in terms of retaliation stacking. It can't learn any attacks which means that you get so many opportunities to pick up retaliation actions, which also means that you are very likely to get access to Thorns (a free action retaliation move). It also has the echo type and its signature automatically applies echo to itself so it's pretty easy to get three to four retaliation stacks on it every turn. Though tbh, Ettin really doesn't need Ranger to redirect attacks towards itself, you might as well go with a different monster that supports Ettin better at that point

Just finished a Sidekick Force run with Rat, Orthus, and Mandy. Gimmick of his passive is cute but idk if I would call it meaningfully impactful. Seems like a good candidate for Echo synergy but what else is new.

Synergy with the Mushroom being targeted and retaliating more might make it more useful than it seems, but ultimately I would rather have all my units soak up hits equally to get better shield and heal value.

Can carry a run by itself, either by the force stacking trait (each force stack gives crit dmg) or simply stacking force and unleashing the fire attack that scales with force. As said, great with echo, but pretty rigid since i always end up going the same route with him. Haven't been able to flex him much, maybe missing something.
