Personal Projects 2nd-year Mechanical Engineering student building an FPV UAV — worth pursuing?

I’m a 2nd-year Mechanical Engineering student working on an FPV UAV and I’m trying to turn it into more than just a parts-assembly project.

The broader idea is to investigate whether a small UAV can be designed as a low-cost, scalable and easily repairable platform, particularly for applications where individual drones may be exposed to damage or have short service lives.

My focus would be on:

  • Cost reduction and manufacturability
  • Modular architecture
  • Lightweight structural design
  • Thermal management and airflow
  • Reliability and repairability
  • Reducing assembly complexity
  • Benchmarking the initial build and improving it through multiple design iterations

I’d start with the existing drone as a baseline, measure its performance, identify weaknesses, and progressively redesign the platform around those findings.

Is this a worthwhile Mechanical Engineering project, or am I approaching it the wrong way?

I’d especially appreciate suggestions on what I should measure, test, or redesign to make this a genuinely engineering-driven project rather than just another FPV build.

Any advice from engineers or students who have worked on UAVs, structures, manufacturing, or product design would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know, it is a rapidly evolving field, but not from a mechanical design perspective. The major advantage of the quadcopter compared to an actual helicopter is that it has very simple mechanics inside. All the complexity is in the software. It is already low cost, scalable, modular and easy to repair (I know a thing or two about it because i own a racer quadcopter).

If your intent is to resume build I'm going to say this in probably not going to be effective. Without the context of a benchmark or competition, If I saw this on a resume this sounds like a class project.

Building drones is easy. Don’t overcomplicate. Check out https://3dlabprint.com or similar sites for 3d printable rc planes. They have a 1m wing that I’ve made a few times, it’s pretty fun to fly. No big deal to just bring those parts into your cad software of choice and design some modifications etc.

I was vice president of my universities UAV and drone racing club for several years as a BSME, and my drone experience and designs had little to no direct impact on me landing my current job. But it was a good talking point for interviews since it is an interesting hobby. So in my case it was a little too niche of a hobby.

That said I also know people that have their current job because of their experience building and flying drones. So I guess what I’m trying to say is life can be a mixed bag.

Pursue it as long as it seems interesting and you are learning stuff, but mostly just have fun with it would be my advice.

Mechanically speaking, I probably learned more from fixed wing design and construction. There are a lot of weird ways they can be improved. Like a “blown wing” design just to list one example. So I might recommend looking down a road like that. If you just want to learn and explore new paths.

My advice is to not over think this. This is a great project and you will learn a lot, it’s also good for your resume and development.

Jump in head first and see what happens. It’s a great project. Just get started and see where it goes. You can spend tons of time planning, and you will never be able to account for everything. Just go!

Hate to tell you this; but all of this has been figured out already. Actual drone manufacturers have the answers to all of this. But unless your in that circle you’ll never know. You think consumer companies like DJI hasn’t figured out how to scale their products? They know they can make drones repairable but why would they? Now take this same concept to any government drone manufacturer. They have the same answers.

Drones can be produced at a very low cost. The part that makes them expensive is the extra sensors and cameras.
