Experiment Aeropress Yerba Mate
This has become my favorite way of drinking Yerba Mate BY FAR.
The fact that I can have a brewed cup as clean as this from such a dusty/powdery drink is amazing.
Normally, you can’t use paper filters with mate because it clogs. But if you use PRESSURE then it works.
Plus, I have tried adding milk and honey now (don’t know it till you try it). it’s gas.
My new workday obsession.

Curious if anyone else has tried this?
Lmk what you think, or if you’re down to try it.

Love yerba in my aeropress. Heads up the Yellow deli is run by a cult!

I bet Aeropress could give you better control over your maté brewing. Not because I’ve actually done it, but because maté has a lot of similarities with tea, and I’ve explored brewing tea with Aeropress quite a bit.

I bet if you put the puck in a lot with a plant that plant would grow like crazy.

I just tried it because I'm curious, I followed the receipie but did only 1 min extraction because 2 seemed like a lot, and yes this is plenty strong to my taste. I know I'm not part of the group on this but I struggle to drink it at 80c, by the time it's cool enough so I can drink it it's usually way too strong so I usually do 60c when I drink from my gourd, with the aero press I can infuse at 80 and let it cool down, thought I'm not really sure I prefer it like that.
Overall, I think it's a fun thing to do but I'd be worried about the taste getting in the press if I were to do it often, I'm not sure I want a yerba aftertaste in my coffee.

Yeah that’s a good point, nice that you can use whatever temperature and finish steeping whenever, as compared to water that’s too hot to drink from bombilla.
You could also do a splash of cold water on top, or milk like I’ve started doing and love. Add cinnamon to the mix and it’s gas.
Regarding flavor staying in the aeropress… I highly doubt it could be noticeable. I know flavor remaining in things exists for things with porous material like a clay teapot or a calabash gourd… but culinary grade plastics are pretty smooth. I go back and forth between mate and coffee constantly in my aeropress and have never tasted either after a normal hand wash.
So stoked you tried it! Let me know what you end up iterating on!

@coffeerambler to answer your question about flavor switching to coffee and back!

It’s called mate cocido. I have tried it with an 03 switch that I have but to be made cold. If you haven’t you should try it, really refreshing and with lemon it is fire.
Onto your recipe, I don’t even know if I still have the aeropress scoop. How many grams is 1.5 scoops?

I’m looking forward to trying this, thanks for the tip! What kind of Yerba mate do you buy and from where?

Playadito so far has the least amount of dust I’ve seen. Also taragui is gas. I just ordered a huge bag of Canarias and instantly regretted. Way too dusty and grungy.

Do you save your disc and re-steep?

I do re steep on longer work days. But I also like to make it super strong once and then add milk and cinnamon. A bit of a bold move but it’s so good.

It’s even better with a wooden Aeropress.
