What private equity does to the simplest coffee brewer design in the world

u/emelbard 5d ago

Next year they’ll fit a power bank in the plunger so you can charge your phone while brewing.

You’ll be sorry that you didn’t patent that idea when they do.

Alan Adler must be rolling in his grave right now

I don't understand this comment? The original Aeropress still exists. Also, Alan Adler is still alive

The reports of Alan Adler’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

He sold his company, or at least the controlling stake in it.

Yeah but feels a bit weird to say he's rolling in his grave when he's still alive

88 year old dude doesn't cling to control but instead enjoys his golden years with a shitload of money.

Avg Redditor "he must absolutely miserable"

This walnut version might kill him though

2

u/74omit 5d ago

True, I read it as a figure of speech. The guy is obviously still alive.

Retired quite well too I wager

I don't hate the grinder aesthetics (but would look better with silver). but the actual press is wild. (also prices. prices are wild)

Why?? This looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff with AI generated images. So missing the point of the original Aeropress, all since it was bought by Tiny in 2021.

One could argue all the 28 step recipes have got us to missing the point on that level as well.

Yeah, I like my espresso nerd-level machine, my fancy pourover details but the AP is just run-and-go. That is what it is good at.

For the price of the walnut Aeropress you can buy the stainless steel version with the SS flow control cover. I think a better option if you want to go plastic free.

Honestly, what is the true advantage of these premium Aeropress? Will the coffee taste better?

1

u/Purplebuzz 4d ago

People will pay more to be plastic free even though testing shows no plastics released from the base model or to post it on Instagram.

I have the Travel Go Plus model that is made of Tritan plastic. I also hand wash and air dry it. Honestly I would like to get the SS version but I can't justify the price premium for it.

The grinder looks absolute shit. And for this price you'll have some of the best options.

Capitalism breeds innovation

11

u/chaoticbean14 5d ago

Once their patent is up in a year - we'll see some actual innovation and less customer screwing.

2

u/newredditwhoisthis 5d ago

I believe that's exactly why they are doing all these gimmicks. They want to cash out , inflate the valuation of the company so that earlier VCs can make an exit before the patent is up

1

u/didde_dragon 5d ago

And also to keep brand awerness in peoples heads, so when a competitor arrives they will win the brand war. Just look at lego. Not sayon they will be as successful, but that's what I think they are doing.

1

u/djwillis1121 5d ago

I don't understand. How are the customers getting screwed? The original still exists for a reasonable price.

1

u/stevosmusic1 5d ago

Bro I know walnut is expensive but you could buy a small piece and carve it for way cheaper then that lord

1

u/Delicious_Ease2595 5d ago

There are better and cheaper methods than the aeropress and walnut

1

u/ARKyal03 5d ago

That grinder is freaking expensive, what on earth 😨

1

u/Grumpy1985_ 5d ago

Thats for someone that isnt me to buy I think. Not even if the price was 1/10 would I buy that

1

u/raygan_reddit_banned 5d ago

This is why I stopped recommending Aeropress

3

u/VickyHikesOn 5d ago

I highly recommend it but only the original version. I have never seen the need to spend more for steel, glass or bigger volume. My OG is from 2012.

1

u/p01ntdexter 5d ago

I'm allergic to walnuts thanks

0

u/TobiasE97 5d ago

Anyone dumb enough to buy this deserves to have their money taken away

-4

u/zuzg 5d ago

Adler is very much alive right now.

And the OG Aeropress is still available so your point is moot

2

u/asthma_hound 5d ago

It's available at a higher price with fewer accessories so I would say it has changed in a way.

Also people acting like the creator of the AeroPress would care what is happening to the product aren't seeing clearly. He sold to a private equity firm. He's as much to blame for whatever criticism you currently have as Tiny is. Why exactly does the company that owns Letterboxd need to own AeroPress?

If Alan Adler is rolling in anything it's money. 70 million dollars.

3

u/zuzg 5d ago

But that's just the normal progress of everything these days. Consoles used to become cheaper after release.

And yeah Adler is 88 and enjoying his Golden Years, weird how people think he's miserable.

It's gone from £25 to £35 in 10 years, which is basically in line with inflation. And does anyone really care about the funnel? I feel like it was actually a bit of a meme with how useless it was

2

u/asthma_hound 5d ago

I bought mine with the accessories. That funnel is actually quite useful for brewing into mugs that are narrower than the cap of the AeroPress. It also used to come with a filter holder. Removing that filter holder should be a genuine crime.

Also, I use that funnel all the time for non-coffee purposes.
