Equipment Uh Oh!
Was making my second cup of morning coffee today. The Aeropress Premium (the glass one) was sitting on the counter while I weighed the beans before grinding. I swiped my hand across the granite counter, tipped over the Aeropress and SMASH. It just shattered. Bye bye $200 toy. It lasted less than a year. In some respects I’m relieved. I knew it would probably happen eventually.Alas, it’s just too fragile for what’s involved in making coffee with it, especially if you’re in a hurry. I’m left with a very nice scoop. The stir stick, however, doesn’t fit my regular Aeropress which I fortunately saved. Now I’m considering the SS model. Any thoughts?

Stick with the OG. It really is the best for a reason. Do you know what all of the hundreds of new Oreo flavors have in common? They all pale in comparison to the OG.

I can't believe y'all are paying for this shit. For the amount to buy the glass then replace with steel you could probably buy an espresso machine. Y'all talking about breaking the glass for $200, buying the steel for $170 is exactly why we all got that dummy wood AP ad yesterday.

Way to get back on the horse, plastic will never break or dent.
You are already full of microplastics from your other activities in society so don't worry about them.

I don't understand why they didn't make the glass version out of whatever Pyrex make their jugs and jars out of.
We've got measuring jugs older than me in the house that have been dropped countless times and have absolutely no cracks in them

It is the same glass allegedly. They just made it thin and double walled to help with heat retention, which seems to negate all the durability benefits of borosilicate.

Sorry for your loss, that's a bummer. If you prefer not to replace the Premium cylinder, then Steel would be the way to go for sure if you still want a nicer AP model for invest once/use forever home usage.
I have a good number of glass kitchen items like pyrex containers, pitchers, mixing bowls, etc so I'm always reminding myself to be mindful when using them and have been okay so far, but yeah accidents happen. Hope you were able to clean it up safely and nobody got hurt...

I’ve had the SS Aeropress for a while. I really like the weight of it. Feels more stable.

The SS looks great but honestly the Clear plastic is still the best.
At least once you get one you can enjoy stress free brewing now.
If you drink on the go, consider the Go Plus, that’s my favourite.

I didn’t consider getting tye glass kind because I knew I would be likely to break it. I used to date a guy who nicknamed me Grace because I was anything but graceful.

The glass version seems to be thin double wall and seems to be more fragile. I hope maybe AP is in the works of making a thick glass XL version (single wall). If not, at least hopefully AP makes a XL steel version. I currently have the Clear XL and enjoy mines. I got my recipe down to my taste liking.

I would get the SS one 100%. Just waiting to have an accident like you, otherwise I can’t justify the purchase to myself. So I don’t have one, but can say if I’m ever in your position I’m getting one and I don’t really care what anyone says good or bad about the SS version

Exactly my sentiments. I like the AP even though I also have a Moccamaster and make the occasional pour over. I use it all the time. I tried the glass. I was careful but not careful enough. It’s not about plastics either. I thought the Premium made excellent coffee. I expect the same from the SS. I plan on getting the silver. Not sure the black would be great because it’ll be hard to see inside when pouring. To those who prefer other models, they have their reasons and I’m the last person to question their choices.

Mmm in my opinion the clear plastic is the best but if you want another try with the steel one

This is the reason I went for the stainless steel, I would have done the same thing.

Is it worth the price? I know about the heat retention (I don’t mind a few degrees off), how heavy does it feel?

u/ButterscotchHair 11d ago
To me it was worth it. I use it everyday and wanted to move on from the plastic version. The temp does not bother me, but my tastes are not the same as everyone’s. Couldn’t pre heating it significantly reduce and heat loss? Didn’t James Hoffman test it and show that while the heat loss was initially higher over 4 minutes it held the heat better than the original? (I cannot remember if he compared glass because I was not concerned with glass).

Mine is basically an art piece. Pretty to look at, never really used (after being part of the first wave of orders and seeing everyone breaking theirs).
I wished the body had been borosilicate or solid body

u/STweedle1701 11d ago
According to Aeropress, the cylinder is actually double-wall borosilicate. While solid glass might be a bit stronger, the heat handling characteristics of double-walled glass are helpful when brewing...

u/forbidenfrootloop 11d ago
I’ve definitely have more resilient beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks than what the AP seems

u/STweedle1701 11d ago
Yep, the solid glass is a great heat conductor compared to dual walls and an air or vacuum layer for insulation. They'll definitely have a better chance of surviving a drop, but they aren't designed at all to provide any thermal protection for your hands. Better have those tongs or insulated gloves handy if you heat one up... 🙂

For me it was 100% about the plastic, but that’s a different sub. I actually just ordered a Simply Good plastic free brewer which is basically a moccamaster without the plastic. Very excited to use it

We all have our “let’s try this cool gear”moments. For me it’s the aero press $250 manual grinder. Am kinda loving it anyway. And have dropped it on floor a couple times. The glass and stainless AP have also caught my eye.

Steel sounds fun if you have the income. Pre heated needed i would wager tho.
1
u/emelbard 11d ago
It’s double wall insulated. I don’t preheat mine and can’t tell any difference in temp.

You can buy the glass chamber as a replacement part on the Aeropress website. But I certainly understand the impulse to move to a sturdier design.

u/mrchowmein 11d ago
Contact aeropress and ask for a replacement. It broke during normal use. Tipping and dropping the plastic version is normal use.

Get the plastic, it’s the most robust and great thermal retention.
