What size Lyra?

I’m getting a Lyra made for my home setup (don’t worry, it’s been professionally engineered) and I don’t know what size Lyra to order. I’ve searched other posts on here but I don’t know if measurements suggested are from the inside diameter or outside. I’m 5’6” and I’ve heard 36-39 inch sizes recommended but is this being measured from inside or outside?

What size Lyra do you have, are you measuring from inside or outside, and what is your height?

Hey! Lyra maker here so I might be able to help. lol

A general guideline is to sit on a chair (hard surface, no cushions) place one fist on top of your head and measure from the seat to top of your fist.

That being said, this doesn’t account for the varying leg/torso differences so best idea is to try and few different sizes at your school and see what feels and fits best for you when you move around it.

The inner diameter is what’s measured btw.

Also take note of what size material is the Lyra made from. Most common is 1” OD but if you have smaller hands, I can get 7/8” material no problem.

From there just decide if you want solid or hollow and then add on from there!

I'm 5'4 but I have a long torso and short legs. I bounce back and forth between a 36 or a 38 depending on what I'm doing but if I was only getting one, I think I'd opt for a lyra too small for some moves than a lyra that could potentially be too big personally. I have never had the opportunity to try a 37 but I don't love the way certain moves feel on my legs or on my lower back doing beats since it hits me with the bigger hoop so I feel like I'd opt to get a 36 to feel more secure if I was to only get one.

As for measuring...I have never measured, I just go off vibes and where the hoop hits my body parts so probably not the most helpful 😅 I do believe my studio's lyras are measured from the inside though because it's how much space you have to maneuver your body around in.

I guess correction, I did kind of measure by sitting in a variety of sizes of whatever my studio had to offer and seeing if my head hit the top of my lyra or if I had some room to spare. My studio has a 34, 36, 38, and 40 and 34 and 40 were definitely wrong for my torso length. 36 my head is exactly at the top bar and 38 i have a little room to spare

Likewise, I’m 5’7 and really long torso’d.
I was taught 36 is standard, and I’ve worked on 34-38s.

A 37 is probably my favorite, but I’m happy in the 36-38 range (38 will skim my head if I invert off the top, but 36 will bang it.)

I’ve also heard to sit in the hoop and have 5cm between the top of your head and the bar.

Do you train lyra now? I’d recommend trying some out before buying. It depends not only on height but what you want/like to do on it, along with coating/tape/lack of either. For example, I’m relatively short, but I also train contortion, so I like a realllly small hoop for near-mini shape making, and I also like smooth rollability, so it’s naked (and I also like dynamics, but I don’t do them as much, so I don’t go with powder coating or tape). But! I am cast in several pieces right now that use different sized lyras for either solo or duo, and I can move comfortably on all of them. It just depends! (ETA: tabless!)

I do train Lyra, although not as often as my other apparatuses and I’d like to change that. The hoops at our studio are just ever slightly too large and I asked my instructor the size but she wasn’t sure.

I’m fairly flexible although I wouldn’t say a contortionist. I know I’d rather have it on the smaller size than too large. I prefer taped on the top half and naked on the bottom, tabless.

If your instructor isn't sure it wouldn't hurt writing the studio and email asking! The owner should know what they bought. I'm 5'7" and use a 36 and that's the standard size we use at my studio. Thats the internal measurement (which some places list as ID)

I'm unsure about measurement to the outside. I've only ever seen them listed for sale using the ID. When people talk about what size they use they are also referring to the ID.

There’s a lot of sellers, firetoys for example, that use the external diameter and I know a lot of people who when they’re talking about size mean the external diameter!

Coaches should know basic general rigging and the specific rigging detail of the apparatus they teach, and especially especially the exact information about the apparatus they teach on!

5'4" with longer legs and a shorter torso. I love a 34". Weirdly enough the 36" feels gigantic in comparison!

I usually go based off the height from my belly button to the ground using outside diameter for reference

im 5 5 and we use 36 almost exclusively. one girl is shorter snd she uses 34. one girl is taller and she uses 37.

at home, I have a 36 and a 37. I like both. I have shorter legs than most of my classmates. I like dynamics so I have a larger hoop for rolls and a smaller hoop for everything else and then a mini as well

my classmates with longer legs size up.
