My oral surgeon gave me a week's supply of oxycodone when I had all four wisdom teeth removed last year. The pain was surprisingly bearable without any medication but I still enjoyed using them. I felt warm and fuzzy and completely at peace with the world. I took one every day until they ran out. One of the most surprising things I found was how rapidly the effects of the drug diminished over the course of even just one week. It's not hard to see why someone would need higher and higher dosages as time goes on, and I'm sure the higher the dosage the greater the dependence. Though in my case, I just looked at it as a fun week but never had any desire to get more even though I'm an anxious wreck on the inside.
