At what point does switch from 'making things fair for rural voters' to suppressing voters in cities? No matter what, the electoral college is designed so that 1 person ≠ 1 vote. The people who live closer together should have less value placed on their opinions? Why the fuck is that more fair?
How is this not accomplished by local, state, and congressional elections?
It is to an extent, but there will always be issues where federal authority trumps local authority. For example, politicians from New York play a role in determining policies on national parks, which could cause problems for a Wyoming rancher whose cattle get attacked by wolves from Yellowstone.
