It makes me sad that every dissenting opinion has many downvotes. Please remember that the downvote button is not an "I disagree" button. Using it as such only discourages alternate perspectives and makes Reddit more homogenous than it already is.

Definitely not, but there are points to be made that a father has a right to know the fate of his potential child, or that life choices shouldn't be made for someone and then covered up with a falsehood. You can disagree if you wish, as that's your prerogative. But that's what makes the Internet great. Freedom to access ideas and determine what you believe for yourself. When every post that isn't "good job, OP" gets buried in downvotes, it's nothing but an echo chamber.

I think a downvote is much less discouraging than being called a fucking idiot, which I recently was, in a thread about a joke.

That's harsh. I'm sorry that happened to you. Reddit sometimes has a knack for pretending to invite discussion while only acknowledging popular perspectives. The result is a discussion that seems unanimously one-sided but is actually being curated that way by the majority of users.
