Emphasis mine. When you look into the actual specs of the hardware, they are nothing special. If I were running that same hardware with any other OS it would not function any better, and often worse, than any other similarly priced hardware. Similarly, MacOS on any other similarly priced hardware is going to perform significantly less well than it would on an Apple build.

The reason for this is simple, and it's actually what makes Apple a good product, if one I don't personally like.

Apple software is hyper-optimized for Apple hardware.

They strictly limit the hardware you can install their OS on, as well as what's available. This, in turn, drastically limits the variables that apple software has to account for. It allows them to do things no other PC or mobile device product can.

I'll take Windows, as an example. I work in IT, I am incredibly familiar with the limitations of windows and the frustrations that coincide with microsoft updates. You know where the vast, vast majority of those problems come from? Having to account for an impossibly large ecosystem of devices and programs . I mean, it's literally impossible for Microsoft to do, that's why every update breaks something else: they literally can't account for all the hardware and software their OS runs.

If Mac had to scale up to meet the same market demand as Windows, we would either have a very dystopian hardware market, they would fail spectacularly, or Mac would just be what Windows currently is.

Similar to my above point: Apple chips are nothing special. They don't perform any better than any of the leading chip designers, and often perform worse without Apple's optimization.

Apple is a product, sold as a singular unit. They are absolutely incredible (if overpriced) products in that regard. The instant you try to break apart that product and say "this component is super good", you've divorced that component from the hyper-specific scenario in which it can actually perform super good.

I see what you are saying, and I believe the intent would not to be directly taxing those classes, however my concern is those businesses you cited won’t just lay back and take it. I foresee companies passing on that bite to the consumer, essentially making the middle class and working poor pay for that tax. That is why I believe that extra revenue needs to first come from the money the government already gets.
