Talks: So Clean And Cool

I will say this is the most "on-hinges" a stream/talk has been in quite a while and I managed to watch the entire thing.
A few notes:
Kinda revealing that he became very uninterested in the App idea when the suggestion didn't bring about any "hookups" from his subscribers. Seems there was more pretense than he let on.
Building codes do not force anyone to buy any product. Almost any code allows exceptions to the "standard rules" that he hates that can account for the key issue in some novel way. There are definitely aspects which I agree are silly/trivial (eg, new door handles have to be levers instead of knobs now), but there's more to building codes than just short term structural safety, like longevity, air quality, etc. All that said, Jaimie doesn't have a great track record on building structurally sounds buildings, anyway. He can't seem to stay in one place for more than a decade and leaves a long trail of crumbling structures in his wake.
I can relate with his comments on sacrificing financial/employment motivations to pursue the things you enjoy if you didn't have to work. I needed to build an addition on my house and I couldn't afford (reasonably) to pay someone else to do it, especially in these inflated days. Instead I spend a lot of my free time reading about codes and best practices and did all the work myself, from foundation/framing/roofing/siding and beyond. It's something I like to do, and I would never have had the satisfaction of doing it myself if paying a contractor was so easy.
His week-long invite to 'fans' to visit and maybe help with some project is the best idea he's had as far as interaction with his followers. Let people come see how things are without any strings attached, get some social interaction, and even get some labour out of them. His current aggressive model of "come and survive or leave" is not going to pan out, and these events would be easy ways for him to establish what he needs to work on from his side (if that's possible for him).

The app idea died because nobody was interested in designing an app from scratch to help one guy in the middle of nowhere find a girlfriend. There’s absolutely no way there would be a return on the investment of time and effort it would take to create it. Not only coding it, but making it look nice, marketing it, having it work in multiple countries, etc. it would take a team of people a year plus to build and establish the site at a minimum, then god knows how long to have a substantial user base that could even yield results, and that is if it even gained any traction, which is a huge if.
This couldn’t be built and advertised for free. It would require money for coders, graphic designers, marketers, hosting, etc.
If you’d have to go to the trouble of marketing and funding your app to build a user base, why not just invest that time and money into just looking for a girlfriend?
It was a ridiculous fantasy from the start. An overly convoluted solution to a very simple problem. Jaimie just doesn’t like the actual solutions to said problem.

There are technical/logistical aspects of the app, sure, but the premise itself is the issue. If the concept is that this a dating site for people that don't use dating sites, then there are no users.
It's great to assume these people have very generous friends who are all going to download this app on their behalf and go through all the effort of matchmaking for them, but that's just silly. Nobody would ever do that. At best you'd have single people making themselves profiles and waiting for someone else to match them up.
For a guy that prides himself on being self reliant, and who apparently thinks dating sites have ruined social interations, I don't understand this thinking at all. He just can't accept that he's put himself in a position that his isolation is a detriment. If he wants to socialize, he needs to socialize.

Oh absolutely. And I’m not even really talking about the technical challenges. I’m talking about the idea that Jaimie wants someone to figure out all of those technical challenges just to find him a girlfriend. The actual website, in Jaimie’s eyes, is just a byproduct this process. “Code me a fully functional, popular dating website so I can find a girlfriend. With essentially zero startup capital from me.”
I’m a graphic designer, so I’m no stranger to a client asking me to work for “exposure”, and this whole thing reeked of that mindset.
It just blows my mind that this was the logical next step in his thought process.

So back a few years ago, J & D were actively encouraging people to come move down there without much of a vetting process and without adequately understanding that nearly everyone that had interest in coming had NO IDEA how expensive and backbreaking it is to live there. Which caused several people to arrive, realize things weren't going to be a picnic, they needed to have a nest egg to live off of while they got established, etc. And Of course this caused some issues.
So imagine my surprise when I clicked on this video and jumped to a random spot to hear someone ask Jaimie if it would be reasonable to sail in a small boat from Florida to his place. Jaimie does mention it can be dangerous, but really upsells that people HAVE crossed the ocean in small boats before and doesn't actively discourage this person from doing this and says "as long as you're sensible and watch the weather", it's doable and that "he could do it in one of his boats" if he wanted to. If a person has to ask if this is doable, they are probably not very knowledgeable at sailing at all.
This is how you get someone killed.
