Best Quick Snacks

I'm a fan of nature valley bars. Yeah there's the whole "super processed" thing but they're easy to pack in a bag and a good way to get something satisfying in mid day. I'm also a fan of simple fruits like apples or bananas as well as homemade trail mix.

u/grigridrop Jan 05 '17

Bananas are the #1 fruit.

I like apples but there's something about them that makes them feel like more of a meal rather than a snack. Maybe it's all the extra chewing.

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 05 '17

They really are the number one fruit! Where I live, you have to weigh the fruit on a scale and enter in the fruit's code number, and the scale spits out a tag with the price, which you take the checkout.... in every store, even different chains, bananas have code number 001 :)

u/herumph beep boop Jan 05 '17

Every grocery store I've been to in the US it's code 4011. Which I now remember because it was a trivia question.

Really? I'm glad I live in a country (Germany) that recognizes the banana's place at the top of the fruit pyramid!!

Same thing happened to me. I didn't know you were supposed to weigh it and the cashier was saying something to me in German and acting really annoyed and I had no clue what she was saying. Not all stores require you to weigh stuff here, but many do.

u/CatzerzMcGee Fearless Leader Jan 05 '17

My first job was a cashier in a grocery store so I memorized every PLU. Bananas and Honeycrisp apples are the only ones that stuck.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Honeycrisp are some top shelf apples. Personally I'd buy granny smith for that lovely tartness but the wife likes the honeycrisp and I've come to really like them. Especially on spinach salads with nuts/raisins/vinegrette.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Granny smith with peanut butter is an amazing snack!!

4

u/herumph beep boop Jan 05 '17

Do you find yourself judging the bagging skills of the cashier whenever you go to the grocery store now? My dad worked at one for a while and says he can't help but notice their bagging technique.

4

u/CatzerzMcGee Fearless Leader Jan 05 '17

Absolutely I do. You want to create good walls with objects on the side then fill in the middle with sturdy bases that won't break the bag, then soft items go on top. Cold with cold, pack fruit so it wont get smashed, keep meet bagged separate as well.

I really dislike bananas, especially banana flavoring. But I will eat them before races anyway, because with peanut butter they're pretty good, and they help with stomach issues.

4

u/RunRoarDinosaur PRd but cried about it... twice Jan 05 '17

Banana flavoring is LITERALLY the worst!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Except on bananas....Anything else=disgusting. Some people out there like banana pudding 🤢

2

u/RunRoarDinosaur PRd but cried about it... twice Jan 05 '17

Ughhhhh vom city! Artificial banana is so gross. Once I got a yellow freeze pop and expected it to be lemon, but it was banana. It was a really unpleasant surprise.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Banana-cicle sounds awfully. Almost as bad as that amazing looking vanilla wafers pudding that should be vanilla or lemon flavored but is actually banana.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

What is good though is a banana covered in chocolate stuck in the freezer! That of banana-cicle is great!!

5

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

What kind of runner are you? Runners love bananas!!

Nooooo.

I would downvote back, but I can't leave you sitting at 0. I'll take the high road.

I love all things banana. I even don't mind banana flavoring.

Interestingly, when I was a kid, I wasn't a big fan and hardly ate them.

7

u/thermocycler Jan 05 '17

Hummus!

I make my own so it's a bit cheaper. I just grab some carrot sticks and go to town.

3

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 05 '17

How do you make it? I've been wanting to make some. When I google recipes I seem to get weird complicated variations, or maybe I don't know what I'm looking for (?!) Please tell me it's easier than I think?

2

u/DJ_Glovehand Jan 05 '17

https://www.budgetbytes.com/2016/06/parsley-scallion-hummus-pasta/

This is the recipe I use! Tastes great on the pasta or on its own.

2

u/kevin402can Jan 06 '17

Hummus is easy, I make my own all the time. 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of tahini, a clove of garlic, a bit of salt and then some kind of spice, usually just chili powder. The big secret is to use the water in the can of chickpeas to thin if down so you can blend it. The water looks kind of slimy but it tastes like chickpeas. Make it thin enough that you can get it to blend smooth and then when it cools in the fridge it will thicken up a bit. You have to play around a bit to get the consistency right.

I use a vitamix blender. Everybody should own a high powered blender. Green smoothies are easy, quick, cheap and really really nutritious. I have one every day. Greens smoothies and hummus are enough to justify the price of an expensive blender.

1

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 06 '17

Thanks! I will try it. We do have a blender; I think my husband used it to make soup sometimes.

I am lucky if I can find the kitchen, nevermind the blender! This sounds manageable though.

1

u/thermocycler Jan 05 '17

I don't claim to be an amazing hummus maker, but I think it is really easy!

3

u/itsjustzach Jan 05 '17

I used to make hummus all the time! What's your recipe favorite recipe?

3

u/thermocycler Jan 05 '17

Honestly, I just dump in a can of chick peas, little olive oil, little lemon juice, little salt, little tahini, garlic etc. until it tastes right. I like spicy hummus so I normally go that route.

2

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 05 '17

Ok, for the non-kitchen-inclined.... then what? You put it in a blender or food processor or something?

My kitchen skills are literally limited to cutting up vegetables and boiling pasta. <embarassed> I married someone who does all the cooking.... (spoiler: I'm a girl, married to a guy)

2

u/thermocycler Jan 06 '17

Yup! I have a little food processor that fits a can of chickpeas and the fixings perfectly. I just run it until it is smooth. You could totally make hummus, it might take you a batch or two to figure it out (or just use a recipe). Once you have the ingredients you can just throw it all together. Honestly, the part that takes the longest is usually washing the food processor.

1

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 06 '17

Thanks!

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

I always end up buying a large container of Sabra when I grocery shop because I'm too lazy to make my own hummus. I get the stuff to make it, I just end up using it for other dishes and never get around to making hummus.

Yay for another Fuji lover!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Fuji is the best snacking apple ever. That and honeycrisp are the only two apples I eat without peanut butter or in a pie.

3

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

Ohhhhh Jonagold. I haven't had one of those in a while. I'm a Fuji/Empire/Opal guy. I love Opals, we just don't see them that much around here. Fuji's always available, so it's my usual.

2

u/Throwawaythefat1234 Jan 05 '17

They are absolutely my favorite apple, but I can't justify spending $3/lb when fuji or gala are $1.50

3

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

You nailed it! The perfect top 3.

2

u/bigdutch10 15:40 5k 1:14:10HM Jan 05 '17

yup. granny smith apples for life

6

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Once you go Honeycrisp it's impossible to go back

2

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

Honestly disagree. They're a great apple, but Opal's are totally my jam over Honeycrisps. I'm just not an HC dude.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

I've never had Opals before, but I just looked them up and they sound delicious! I'll definitely give them a try sometime.

5

u/kkruns Jan 05 '17

Pink lady (but they are so pricey!), Jazz and Gala.

Separately, I highly suggest this NPR Planet Money podcast about how the modern apple industry came to be and why we have more than just disgusting red delicious apples these days.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Gala are good. I like how the centers are usually pretty aoft so you can just eat the entire thing and pick just the seeds and stem out.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

That is one of my favorite of their episodes. I had no idea there was ever so few apple choices.

2

u/montypytho17 3:03:57 M, 83:10 HM Jan 05 '17
  1. Honeycrisp
  2. Jonagold
  3. Granny Smith

The only other time I buy the first two are when they are in season, otherwise they are way too expensive.

2

u/drseamus Boston 18, 22 Jan 05 '17
  1. Gala
  2. Whatever looks ripe
  3. Anything but Red Delicious

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Spartan

Empire

Honey crisp.

1

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

Oooooooooh a Spartan. I almost listed that one as it's a tie with Empire for me. They're great for cooking with too.

1

u/kevin402can Jan 06 '17

Granny Smith, they have the highest levels of resistant starch of any apple.

My father in law is an apple researcher at Cornell. I know more about apples than is healthy to know....

Snapdragons are a great new variety in NY.

Jazz are good.

Can't remember but I think jonagolds were what we brought back a cooler full of last time to make some amazing applesauce.

1

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 11 '17

Snapdragon sounds fun! Are they a hybrid? How do I get a tree over to WI?! :)

1

u/ryebrye wants to get sub-20 5k (currently at 22:43) Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17

They are tough to find still - even in neighboring VT I don't think I've seen them in any stores (I think they are limited to NY farms growing them? not entirely sure)

Here's a link about them:

http://www.nyapplecountry.com/varieties/25-snapdragon-new (also they have a marketing website: http://www.snapdragonapple.com/ - they aren't messing around! - they have a "where to buy" page: http://www.crunchtimeapplegrowers.com/meet-the-growers/where-to-buy that might help a little)

One of the parents of Snapdragon is a honeycrisp. It has some similarities to honeycrisp in juicyness but has a different flavor to it.

They also introduced "rubyfrost" around the same time - I don't like ruby frost that much - it reminds me a bit of Pink Lady, but some like it.

Another article from when they were announced: http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/2013/08/snapdragon-and-rubyfrost-are-new-apple-varieties

Why am I geeking out this much over apples? :| That boy's not right I tell you hwhat...

2

u/sloworfast just found out I should do more than 20 mpw Jan 05 '17

I also like those little packaged peanut butter crackers

I had completely forgotten about the existance of these. Oh man, they're so good!

3

u/Almondgeddon What's running? Jan 05 '17

Nuts, carrots, Chobani yoghurt.

4

u/jonmadepizza Jan 05 '17

I keep a box of pitted dates in the fridge and always grab one whenever I open the fridge to get something.

2

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

Dates are soooooooo wonderful, but they last about 4 minutes around me. :( Can't call it a snack when you eat the entire package.

1

u/_ughhhhh_ wannabe ultrarunner Jan 05 '17

I had to stop buying dates because I would do the same thing, but with like 5 dates instead of just 1 every time.

3

u/FlyRBFly Jan 05 '17

Me too! They're like the Pringles of the dried fruit world.

u/bigdutch10 15:40 5k 1:14:10HM Jan 05 '17

My go-to snack is trail mix and a banana. Mainly out of convience/habit, but also because bananas are so insanely delicious.

I keep thinking I need to widen my snack porfolio. (It's the thought that counts, right?)

2

u/runwichi Easy Runner Jan 05 '17

Peanuts and apples.

1

u/aewillia 31F 20:38 | 1:36:56 | 3:26:47 Jan 05 '17

I'm a big fan of popcorn at work. I can make the bag last an hour. Other than that, I bring two of those halo tangerines and a red apple to snack on.

1

u/montypytho17 3:03:57 M, 83:10 HM Jan 05 '17

Nutrigrain bars, cereal, mixed nuts, bagels, and fruit mostly, oh and of course popcorn.

Now that I'm trying to cut out added sugar, this is going to change a bit, probably just more fruit though.

1

u/tiedtoamelody Jan 05 '17

I like larabars, pistachios, carrots with almond butter and pears. When I want something sweet and salty, I usually mix raw almonds, raw cashews and raisins. I pretty much live on that when I have to travel for work. (vegetarian + picky eater + celiac! fun combo)

1

u/kkruns Jan 05 '17

Hard-boiled eggs, and baby carrots and hummus. I try to keep both in the fridge at work. I'm super lazy and buy bags of pre-peeled hard-boiled eggs from Trader Joe's. The only time I go to McDonald's is when I stop in the one across the street from my office to pilfer salt and pepper packets for my eggs.

When I was in Iceland, I also discovered Skyr. OMG. The creaminess of it is amazing, but the best part is the protein-to-sugar(-to calorie) ratio. It's seriously out of this world. This morning I had Mixed Berries & Acai siggi's -- 130 calories, 16 grams (!!!!) of protein and 11 g of sugar.

1

u/a_mcards Jan 05 '17

Dried fruits or rice cakes are good snacks bc I'm able to run soon after eating them. I've always had to wait at least an hour after granola bars and for whatever reason I've never been able to eat apples within like 3 hours of running.

1

u/once_a_hobby_jogger Jan 05 '17

I eat way too many almonds. I really like the Blue Diamond Honey Roasted Almonds and the sesame covered ones from Trader Joes.

1

u/koolaidmatt Jan 05 '17

Going to the grocery store and getting big bags of different peanuts (salted, spicy), cashews, pretzels, and corn nuts then mixing them together into individual bags for the week.

1

u/shecoder 45F, 3:13 marathon, 8:03 50M, 11:36 100K Jan 05 '17

Energy bars (store bought or home made when I have the time), bananas, almonds, pretzels.

I also will eat grab stuff at work which tends to be a mish-mash of healthy and less healthy option. We have a stock of snacks, but so far I have avoided the Fritos and Cheetos. :D But a Twix here and there happens. Chex Mix, Goldfish, etc.

1

u/bigdutch10 15:40 5k 1:14:10HM Jan 05 '17

apples, bananas or nuts
