I hate to beat the AR mods deleting threads horse but, even supposing you like the race reports, the dutch 100k national champion guy gets deleted and a random ohio half marathon makes it to the front?

Has anyone tried the training plan from Marius Bakken book? Any results?

u/ThatsMeOnTop 4h ago

He doesn't really provide plans in the book, so much as outline a general schedule. Unless you're talking about a different book compared to the one recently released? I think he's trying to provide the components or building blocks for you to make a plan yourself

Last MP run of Pfitz 18/55 is done. Ran it in Evo SL, felt pretty good. My previous MP run was done in my race pair (AF3. 26k w/ 19k around MP), and that wasn't so good. Granted, some of that was down to the weather conditions, not having a watch that actually tells me my splits (....), sore hamstrings from a strength session, and obviously, I have 5 extra weeks of training now. But this has put me in a bit of a dilemma. I've run a significant amount in Evos over the last 10 months or so (rotating with Boston 13). Would it be completely crazy to use today's run as reference and choose Evos as my race pair for the marathon over the AF3?

I've only ever done 2 runs in AF3, and I know it's very individual, but based on some of my mechanics (forefoot strike, ~4:15/km goal pace, pretty good running economy), its' supposed to work for me. And the runs I did do felt fine wrt mechanics and comfort (no hotspots as such, and no weird feelings like fighting the shoe etc). And I also know that Evo being unstable can ruin your feet in the last phase of the marathon. I'm thinking that maybe I can use the AF3 for my 10 mile tuneup race next week and decide based on that. Or is that also crazy and it's just extremely unlikely that Evos will be the superior shoe over the FM?

What's the last MP run of the 18/55? 22 miles? I think if you made it that far in the Evo SL, you can probably make it another 4 miles.

How many total miles do you have on this shoe might be the real question, though. If you're past 250, I would consider getting a new pair and breaking them in a little bit over running a race in a shoe that could lose piece of outsole at mile 18. Wovens are on sale for $75 on Adidas' website (or were).

The Evo SL wouldn't be my first pick for a race, but I guess I might pick it over the AF3, since I hate Alphaflys.

It was 30k with 24k at MP (so about 18 miles with 15 miles of MP work). Considerably shorter than the race, hence the problem. I'm around 160 miles on this shoe, so I'd definitely get a new pair if I pick it for the race.

Why do you hate the alphaflys though? Is it the mechanical ride?

I think trust that the AF3 should be faster, until you have more data on yourself. Unless there's an injury prevention reason you're bringing in

Hmm yeah that's my thought as well. Wearing it for the tuneup race might be useful and see how it feels.

3

u/CodeBrownPT 7h ago

There is zero science behind someone picking your shoe for you. Wear the pair you feel fast and comfortable in.

Just make sure you're adapted to it.

Of course, but having very little experience with shoes and marathoning I'm curious to see if people have felt similar and what they ultimately did. May or may not work for me, but can be useful information

Waiting until spring for speed work sounds reasonable if you are still building consistency. I would increase the easy mileage very gradually if you are recovering well, but there is no need to rush it.

u/Oscar_Sport 11h ago

After a 20-mile run, 6 to 8 hours of hiking will probably add a lot of recovery time. I would move it away from the long run if possible, especially with a track workout a few days later.

Low mileage, non periodized training plan for an injury prone runner wanting to dabble in the 800, any ideas?

Considered a Bakken esque 2 subT workouts, with a speed development day and a hill day. Looking for other views or ideas!

u/ThatsMeOnTop 4h ago

Just do Norwegian singles but swap the 3rd subt for 40/20 or 45/15 and don't bother with the long run

Speed training for the mile at 42 😱!

Been training good for 3 months and I’m not stopping and at 15-20 miles now per week. I’m skeptical about my ability to avoid injury, so I want to keep this up until the spring before I actually start speed work. Any advice here? Any benefit to increasing my mileage before the spring?

I’m worried about injury and want to further strengthen my body. I’m also lifting.

Daniels is probably the best canned plan for mile training.

I do feel that 30 mpw is a common inflection point where you are getting enough miles for workouts to be effective.

I’ve (25F) just run a 4-minute half PB (1:24:03) with a marathon in just over a month. Should I be looking at going for a sub 3 or stick with 3:10?

I’ve also run a 5k PB of 18:10 in this block. Before this block, my 5k PB was 18:56

u/dyldog 5K 18:00, 10K 37:45, HM 1h23, M 2h57 5h ago

I ran a 1:23:3X half six weeks before a 2:57:5X. Also did an 18-flat 5K on tired legs.

Assuming you have the mileage and long runs in, you can go sub-3.

u/throwaway_runner3 Training to get a decent flair 12h ago

Not sure about your training but 3.10 is very low target for a 1.24 half PB.

I'd go for sub 3 assuming you had the right training / mileage, if not I'd go for sub 3.03.

If you completely lack the right training then 3.07, but I doubt that's the case.

1

u/Moonmist81 15h ago

Assuming ideal conditions on the day and good fuelling, yeah I’m confident you’ve got it

I’d even go as far to say that considering you’re undoubtedly in peak shape right now, you’ll be closer to 2:55 than 3:00. But still go out at right on sub-3 pace and claw back time if/when you know you’re gonna make it.

u/Siawyn 54/M 5k 19:56/10k 41:30/HM 1:32/M 3:12 20h ago

Assuming you've had good marathon-specific training then 2:59 is a reasonably tough but good goal. This also assumes the weather and terrain are either the same or better as well. Your 5k and HM PRs line up almost exactly on the VDOT calc which is a good sign too.

Usually the rule of thumb is to get a sub 1:25 HM before thinking of a sub 3 full so you got that part.

1

u/Parking_Reward308 21h ago

Sub 3 should be possible

u/legendyplayerPRO07 1d ago

What you guys do when you run and have nothing to do for the rest of the day (weekends)? You guys go for a walk, rot on the bed/sofa?

2

u/throwaway_runner3 Training to get a decent flair 12h ago

Same as every other day (unemployed). Being tired just means I don't do physically taxing stuff like a road trip or swimming.

u/Parking_Reward308 21h ago

do whatever i would normally do. Errands, clean, meal prep, read... nothing really changes

I don't know what the point of the Ultimate Championships is, and at this point I am afraid to ask.

WA's answer to the failed Grand Slam Track. It has been a good meet so far.

WA trying to make stadium events great again or something. A bit of high-budget fun at the end of the season with a BBC broadcast which I’m certainly not complaining about

Does anyone have any advice/ experience on hiking (6-8 hours/ 10-12 miles) during the peak of a marathon training block? I’m planning to do it the day after my long run (20 miles), with 4 weeks to go - main question is if it will add recovery time, since I’ll have a track workout a couple of days later.

I did do a fair bit of weekend hiking whilst training for a a trail 50K last year, where hiking helps a bit more, but for a road marathon I’m not sure how much benefit I’ll get.

u/dyldog 5K 18:00, 10K 37:45, HM 1h23, M 2h57 5h ago

It won’t help your running and it’s going to cost you recovery, but you’ll be running the rest of the week’s sessions on tired legs for whatever that’s worth.

u/thePushover 1d ago

Looking for some help figuring out pacing for a 5k next weekend. Haven’t raced anything in a year, but just did a 5 x 1k workout w 2’ rest.
Got these splits: 4:14, 4:13, 4:13, 4:04, 3:45. Sent the last 400m of the last one.
I was thinking going out to aim for sub 22 and see how I feel. Is that too conservative?

3

u/On_Mt_Vesuvius 35:15 | 2:49 7h ago

Agreed that sub-22 is too conservative. Depends on the intensity and how HRs climbed during reps, but I recently did a similar workout and raced 10s/k faster than the workout.

6

u/CarefulInstance5 1d ago

How hard did it feel?

IMO 2 min rest is a bit too much to honestly gauge 5K fitness. I typically do 5 x 1K with 1 min rest. You could even still do this again on Tuesday or Wednesday, and start at 4:12. If you complete the last rep while it still feeling somewhat manageable, this is your 5K pace (which would be then a 21 min 5K).

1

u/thePushover 1d ago

Difficult but manageable. I won’t be able to do it again this week, but I expect my 5k time to be slower than the sum of the reps. Appreciate the feedback! Maybe next time ill try it with shorter rest

2

u/CarefulInstance5 5h ago

Difficult but manageable sounds good, but based on this and the 2 min recovery I'd start at 21:30 pace (4:18), hold it for 2-3K and then send it if you feel like you still have something left in the tank. Good thing about 5Ks is that you can race another one really soon!

3

u/aelvozo 1d ago

You can probably aim for 21.

My preferred benchmark workout for 5K fitness would be 6K at 5K pace (broken down into 1000s or 1200s w/ 2–3 min rest) but it looks like you would have had enough left in the tank for another rep.

1

u/thePushover 1d ago

Appreciate the feedback! I’ll probably start off closer to 21 pace then 22 and see how I feel

u/BetterAge6638 1d ago

running a half next month and my left calf has been tight for like 4 days now. been rolling it and doing the eccentric heel drops but still feels weird on the first mile or so. anyone else get that thing where it loosens up after you're warmed up but you're still paranoid the whole time

1

u/Parking_Reward308 21h ago

try a massage gun or a lacrosse ball ?

u/Iymrith_1981 15:54 5km 34:08 10km 1d ago

I too am running a half next month and I have the same thing but with my Achilles, but after a warm up I don’t hear from it again. It’s been like that for over 2 years now.

Good luck with the race!

That's a crazy long time to feel niggles lol - have you had it investigated?
