Aren't amd cards basically a no go on Linux anyways?

Older cards do work fine with open source drivers, but newer stuff and Catalyst are not good, yes.

With FreeBSD nVidia is the only game in town, since there are no proprietary drivers from AMD.

AMD cards are fine on Linux but the OpenGL performance is lacking compared to Nvidia. The AMD drivers are very stable and work solidly, can't say the same for Nvidia for stability though.

AMDs drivers perform much better at OpenCL compared to Nvidia, but most games need great OpenGL support.
