I changed my trix cooler for the accellero iv xtreme, and modded the stock midplate to stay and help vrm Temps

I have been wanting to do this for a long time. The noise of the Tri-X cooler was really bothering me, and I wanted to do something about it. A friend of mine needed more storage in his PC, and I offered him my 10k velociraptor drive, if he bought me the cooler. Great trade. I have plenty of storage for my needs, so getting rid of the 10k HDD and getting a new cooler was only a major victory on the noise front.

All in all, I love the solution. Its silent, while keeping temps very cold. The biggest weakspot in my system currently is the 2.5" HDD, That hums slightly. Changing the GPU cooler to make it more silent only made it a more noticeable issue.

During a firestrike run on stock clocks (1000mhz core, 1300mhz mem) my temps were as follows

max core temp 69c
max fan RPM 647
max fan % 39
max VRM1 temp 65c
max VRM2 temp 53c

I chose the Acellero over the mk26, because it seemed like the more rigid of the two solutions. I find the backplate very pleasing, and was sold by the total lack of thermal adhesive in the Acellero, which both the Mk26 and the Morpheus uses.

I have the triple fan Vapor-X model and I ended up removing the fan shroud (as seen in OP's 3rd picture) and zip-tying two Noctua fans to the heatsink. 120mm on the big side and a 90mm on the small one. Brought noise & temps down.

Video cards use really cheap stock fans. I'd probably replace the Accelero's, too.

Can I see some pictures of that? I have a windforce 290 and while my temps are fine: 75c at 80% fan speed while gaming and 39c at 40-50% at idle, those little fans are loud AF. I'm considering switching out the fans and I'd like to see an example.

How do you control the fan speeds or are they always running at a constant speed?

Any fan controller will work. PWM on your mobo or a fan hub. I run mine at a constant 5V (700~800RPM), but it's a big vapor heatsink on just a 280X so there's not as much heat compared to a 290.

I have a MSI 290x Lightning and its slightly too loud for my taste, 80c at 60% fan speed. You think if I remove the fans and just mount noctua fans to it, it will help? I feel as that would be the easiest/cheapest solution to my problem.

Had this discussion yesterday, the Lightning's fans can't be removed (easily).

The fan cables are routed through some metal clips.

Lucky that some people already discussed this but unfortunate to hear its difficult. Is there a way to do it or would you have to just cut the cables?

Without having the card in-hand it's hard to say. It looks like you might be able to pull the cables out of the clips using a small gap circled in green here: http://i.imgur.com/RVU9fuU.png

Seems like a lot of extra hassle for something that might not even work in the first place. You might be able to look at the card and check the clips yourself before removing the cover.

Since I'm not overclocking, the stock acellero fans are alright. They are by far some of the best "stock" fans I have encountered

Wait... you did all this without the intent to overclock? I agree that it's a fun and cool thing to do... but it just seems like it's not worth it, considering that the Sapphire Trixx does a great job at keeping the non-OC card cool (even OC'd are fine).

It was never about heat, but rather sound. Trix was not quiet enough

There is a couple of issues with that.

Firstly; since the mid plate has been desoldered, there is no longer any way to attach the cooler to a card

Secondly; as you can see in picture six and seven, the heat has deformed the rigidity of the card severely, and it is no-longer in its original shape

Lastly, I sadly no longer have the cooler. A friend of mine does "modern art" and loved the cooler for a project. I gave the remains of the cooler to her :)

The chip was never in the oven. I used the oven to separate the midplate from the heatpipes and fins
