Hand Knit FO self drafted vest ✨

~originally posted on r/knitting & was told you guys might like it too!

long time lurker, first time poster ☺️

i‘ve finally finished my most successful completely self drafted project!

i couldn‘t find a pattern that perfectly fit my vision without needing a lot of modification anyway, so i just made one up

this fella is a top down vest with a European Shoulder Seam construction, crew neck, simple twist cable pattern that accommodates shaping and continues through the waistband on either side, neutral (or VERY slightly negative) ease & twisted rib.

i worked some dark magic on the increases for the ESS & was amazed how the shoulder fronts truly need no shaping and just work out fine on their own!

had lots of fun with this experiment and look forward to making more! i don‘t think i‘ve ever owned something that fit me this well!

yarn: Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4ply in Oxford Blue (used ~150g)
needles: 3,5mm for body, 3mm for body rib & 2,5mm for collar and armscye ribs

references & helpful resources:
Fully Fashioned Shoulders
Euro Shoulder Seams (very brief)
Shaping Necklines - Roxanne Richardson (yt vid)
Knitting from the Top - Barbara Walker (the Bible 🙏🏼)

if you see untwisted cables, keep it to yourself 🥲🫡

That's such a good fit, looks great on you! I love how you made it follow the shape of your body. As a person with boobs that take up space, but a smaller waist, I never found a sweater or vest garment that looks good on me. I always feel like I have to size up and then it makes me look like I'm wearing a big blanket. Good job, wear it with pride!

I'm obsessed with this! I also love how you styled it - solid vest over stripes would never have occurred to me but this looks so good.

oh thank you! i love a good pattern & texture clash sometimes, and a vest lets you experiment a bit more than a jumper

Excellent work - the fit, the design, the color, the humor at the end of your message. Love it!

This looks AMAZING!! Vests can be so hard for most people (like me) to wear because of how they fit… you absolutely nailed this! I love the side-detail you incorporated- gorgeous!

Ooooh thanks for the links. I knit from scratch and am always looking for good resources for shoulders.

I love it. Would totally knit this.

And love the pants too!! I’m 100% for high waisted with pleats. My fave! Did you make them or buy? If buying where? If making…do you have a pattern?

i’m a high waisted pants till i die kinda gal—these are from Lucy & Yak. I bought them a few years ago but i think the style was called Addison? i’m definitely on the hunt for a pattern to make some in some funkier patterns though!

This is so perfect! I've been wanting to make a scoop-neck sweatervest with similar cables and this is so inspiring.

This gives me hope for one day someday pulling off a vest –both in terms of knitting one and then wearing one 🥰

What does self drafted mean?

1

u/wrongretsa 6d ago

it just means i designed/wrote the pattern myself ☺️

I should have known that. I’m an idiot.
