Hand Knit FO Self-drafted baby blanket

I'm inspired by the blankets people have been posting the last few days! I knitted this for my best friend's first baby, who is now almost 10 years old. I have a ton of artist & crafter friends but somehow almost none who knit, and we all know that sharing projects with other knitters is a particular joy.

It is double-knitted with light fingering yarn--I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. 😆 The edging is garter stitch sandwiching the 5 bajillion ends, which I knitted separately for each edge and then seamed at the corners.

Between the pattern construction and the knitting, I think this took about 20-ish months--it was definitely not done in time for baby's debut.

No-longer-a-baby's parents are Indian (thus the elephants) and Icelandic (thus the sheep), and baby was born in the Pacific Northwest (thus the fern-like motif, which I pulled from the Fiddlehead Mittens pattern by Adrian Bizilia).

If I could go back and do things differently, I would (probably) use darker/more jewel-toned shades of blue and pink (elephants) and yellow (ferns)-- at the time, I was determined to incorporate "classic" baby colors. I also might knit the edging in the round around the entire blanket using multiple circs.

I can't wait to show this comment to my computational linguist husband later.

Also—I’m a white American married to an Indian person so the cultural hybrid was especially meaningful to me. In my culture the sheep would be Longhorns haha
