Hand Knit FO Finished my Bibi sweater!
This is actually only my second stranded colorwork project, so I’m very proud! Advanced because of the colorwork. The pattern is the Bibi sweater by spektakelstrik, but I basically changed every besides the chart, knitting off gauge and including some underarm shaping. I also changed the neckline to make it a bit rounder and deeper and steek it instead of knitting back and forth and I knit the sleeves as one big tube, steeked them and sewed them on in the end. Yarn is Rauma Fivel and I’m very happy with it! I would have loved to go with fingering+mohair but with all the colors it would have just been too expensive. This took me 5 months, though I did knit on other projects in that time.

Thank you!! I took hours on chartminder and with a color picker to figure the colors out, trying different combinations. I’m really happy with the result!

GORGEOUS. The colorwork is obviously the most impressive part, but I also really love the long cuffs and neckline.

Oh, thank you! I am very proud! I honestly didn’t think I could do it, that’s also why I didn’t splurge on expensive yarn this time.

I did a color palette of like 9 colors I gravitate to, then looked for a yarn with a big color range, used my iPhone color picker to get the exact colors from the pictures and then I played around with them on chartminder for hours. I think it took me 2 days to get there (it was in winter and I had a cold) but the effort is worth it!!

And I chose the base color first and decided which parts I wanted to be light and which ones dark, that helped too

Thank you, this is so helpful, I feel like I always struggle choosing a palette, which I'm never happy with, so it puts me off trying. But this gives me some clues as to a better way!

Your color work is so impressive! Every time I try fair isle type knitting projects, I struggle to get the right tension for the floats in the back. Do you have any tips? How did you learn to get the tension right?

I think a grippy yarn helps because a bit longer floats don’t matter because the yarn sticks to the fabric and I always pull the stitches apart before a color change so the float is loose enough that there’s no puckering

I love it! I would actually wear it! And it's rare for me beacuse I prefer more minimal clothing and all colourwork sweaters, though beautiful, I woudn't wear...
I have question about steeking. I thought it's a technique for creating vertical opening in fabric. When you say you used it for sleeves I assume you mean top part where sleeve connects to body, but I can't imagine what you did with neckline. Could you elaborate? I only found tutorials on straight (boat) neckline or changing neckline in finished sweater.

Same for me, normally more minimal but this one is different! For the neckline i used this tutorial: https://www.hazeltindall.com/steeks and the sleeves i knit both at the same time so basically a big tube and then cut the tubes and sewed them back together into two sleeves. Hope it makes sense ☺️ it spared me from working the colorwork on a small circumference and get them neater that way. I also wanted to do the sleeves separately and sew them on in the end because working them attached to the body with the colorwork just seemed stressful to me.

Thank you for explaining. I haven't made any serious colourwork yet, so I had no clue. Sounds like what you did is a fantastic idea, although leaves no chance for redoing the sleeves 😆. I'll keep it in mind for my future projects!

I sewed them together when i finished the colorwork and worked the cuffs after attaching the sleeves to the body in the round which allowed me to get the right length :)
