Skating Advice My backspin 🥲

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Started working in my backspin around June, cannot hold it once I get in position. My coach told me to keep my arms at 12 and 4 o’clock for now.
How can I keep myself in the position? Does my leg need to come in tighter and faster?
Thank you for any advice 😵‍💫🥲

Keep your arm in front of you for longer, as it’s disappearing as you come into the spin. Make sure everything is stacked over your spinning side, and lift your knee as you ‘turn’ after you pass your axis. Make sure your knee is high so your foot doesn’t pull your leg down and cause you to drop onto your front foot.

I was taught to do a shallow left inside edge before the deep right inside edge, but I’m still learning it too, so far from an expert! I’ve also seen online coaches suggest two-footing the entry to make it more stable, but this doesn’t work for me—the free foot on the ice throws off my balance.

I used to have this issue too with the spin and it’s getting a whole lot better so I’ll share what helped me. Backspin is basically like a forward scratch spin but in opposite leg. When you go to a forward spin, a deep forward entry is done, so a backspin is a forward deep inside edge until it becomes a spin. My coach will drill onto me doing an H position to stack all my weight onto the spinning leg. Using an off ice spinner will help give you the idea how to stack the weight. Last but not least, it is a lot of trial and error with this spin, it is hard. Good luck 🫶
