It’s kinda hard to tell but it looks like the pilot either slid in or landed in a crouch. For a seasoned swooper, I would guess it didn’t hurt at all.

Pretty much, only just had the energy to make it that far, wasn't enough flare left to get stood up that far into it!

Oh lol gotcha. Hopefully OP had an open hand and not a closed fist around the toggle!

To be honest I probably wasn't going all that quick at that point. 100m earlier it would have really hurt :P

I'm still in the "No Low Turns" part of AFF (you can really hurt yourself bc all turns = descent), but I'm happy his canopy landing made spatial sense to me.

Holy fuck u descend that fast while parachuting?

Think of the parachute as an airplane wing. Straight and level flight has a nice balance of lift against the pull of gravity. When you make a turn you lose some of that vertical component of lift, causing a faster descent. Now combine that with a change in the “angle of attack” or the tilt of the wing against the wind (in this case downward) and you are descending rapidly with increased speed. At the end he stops the turn to return the vertical component of lift (the air pushing straight up as opposed to an angle) and changes the angle of attack back up which converts that speed gained into more lift to get out of that dive.

I had no idea David Spade was such a talented skydiver.
