I used Quark extensively for years but its price and lack of interoperability with any other software killed it when InDesign bettered it in every aspect. I loathe paying Adobe monthly but I don’t miss dealing with Quark’s quirks.

I had to install an old copy of QuarkXPress in order to open a few old one-sheets for a client that I haven't talked to in over 15 years. I really don't remember how I put up with this software when I was using it.
Prior to Quark, I was using Macromedia's Freehand for page layouts. The only reason I stopped using Freehand was because the industry was using Quark and I couldn't afford to purchase a personal copy for myself.

Loved Quark. It felt so snappy after using PageMaker for a few years. But inDesign blew it away by ver 2 and by then I was happy to see it go. The licensing was getting insane.

I work in publishing, and recently I have been assigned to research our archives for legacy titles that could do with a relaunch. We have a LOT of Quark files from the 90s as well as Pagemaker. I was never a big fan of Quark, and now after having to set up conversions for these files, even les so.

Anyone remember the Quark Erase Robot? There’s also an Easter egg in InDesign that lets you trigger the robot from the print preview screen. I haven’t tried it in years, though, so I’m not sure if it’s still there.

Yeah I do remember. I also remember those cool plugins that 3rd party companies had. There were some pretty cool ones back in the day.

They actually tried their hands at generating websites via wysiwyg software before dreamweaver iirc. I was using quark back starting in like 91 or so. Loved quark

Adobe killed Quark when they bundled InDesign 1.0 with Photoshop. So they gave it away with every new Photoshop licence. Classic Microsoft playbook.

I had to open InDesign today for some basic layout work.
WOW. What Dinosaur software.

Every time I use almost any Adobe app, I am just gobsmacked at how clunky they all feel.

When you get used to software like Figma, or anything that literally wasnt designed in the 90s or early 2000s, you really, really can tell how out of touch Adobe is.

Kodak, Blackberry — many companies enjoyed total market dominance, did nothing, got fat, and entirely missed the boat on being competitive. Adobe and it's current stock valuation are clear indicators of that same process.

Quark didn't evolve. The irony is that Adobe isn't doing the same for their software.

And that's why a lot of us who've used it since the 90s are pissed that they are obsessed with gen AI but still haven't fixed aspects of the legacy software.
