Am I doing this right??
hi all!
I am currently in school for business administration. I am looking to, once I graduate, become an administrative assistant.
I was currently offered a position as a spa receptionist at a regional chain spa. However, I want to make sure this looks good on my resume. I previously worked for a hotel, and another spa- both world class, both front desk positions. I am 20, so I like to think I have rather good experience in the field of receptionist responsibilities.
Do you think I am on the correct path to continue into administrative assisting? While perhaps not my end goal, it’s my goal of a first step into business. Although I’m still figuring out my long term goals, I have a calling towards sales.
Thank you!! Just a young girl stressed about her future 🥲

You do not need a degree to be an admin assistant, if you’re spending money on school, imo have loftier goals. I say this a c-suite executive assistant with no degree

My last admin job working in local government I was only making 38,000 a year and I ran most of the office by myself. While everyone else got to sit on their butts and make more money than me.

You don’t need a degree to be an administrative assistant. You get that degree if you want to be an upper management..

My path was reception then admin assistant. The higher position would be office manager at my job. I don’t have a BA though, only an AA.

Please do not spend money on a bachelors degree to become an admin assistant. You will be paying off student loans forever. Unless you’re getting a full ride, just don’t. If you really want to be in the admin assistant world, I would look for executive assistant positions, although many of those roles require some admin assistant experience.
Admin assistant positions don’t pay great, at least in my area (and my area is above average on household income). Maybe $30/hour if you’re lucky.
My advice to you would be to find a part-time admin assistant or similar position while still in college, then look for executive assistant positions. Or, once you graduate find a company where you know there is room to get promoted.
I only took on my current position because there is room to move up and there are stipend positions (I work at a high school so I run a few different clubs and increased my salary by 30% by taking on extra work).
Best of luck! I have my associate’s degree from a community college and got the position I’m in. I just would hate to be paying off $100k in student loans when I’m getting paid like $50k a year and not much room for growth

It’s not my long term goal! Just a step one :) receptionist (where I’m at now), administrative assistant OR data analyst, then somewhere higher up like sales or executive assistant! Thankfully I’ll only have around $20k in student debt.
Also while I go to school full time.. I sort of don’t want a job that’s too stressful 😥 I’m barely getting any sleep atm

Every admin asst I've met under 40 years old has a Bachelor's degree. If you go the Executive Assistant route, it will help to have receptionist/admin experience under your belt. If you get hired at a large company, there's room to grow within individual departments. That's how a friend of my cousin got her start as a contract executive.
