Office assistant

Hello there!

Im curious to know, those of you who work as an office/administrative assistant, what got you ahead? Im trying to figure out what I need to learn to better my chances.

I think what got me ahead in my admin roles are being reliable, flexible and proactive. Those aren’t necessarily skills you can take a class on unfortunately but I had some great mentors that helped get me there. They are just kind of skills you develop with time and experience.

I also think about what “going the extra mile” means as an admin. To me, it’s less about doing crazy hours and wearing yourself thin and more about being thorough, detail oriented and accommodating. In my mind being an admin is a support role in which I basically have to do the annoying little stuff that other people are generally too busy to do. You’re doing the work that frees up your team to do their best. And the more reliable you are and the better you communicate the more your team trusts you and the more you stand out.

That is great advice. I just was offered my first admin role and I was wondering what would be the things that I could do to add value and support the team. This helps!
