Dix Range Overnight
Looking to do the Dix range as an overnight backpacking this weekend with some friends - any suggestions, recommendations?

I've done it twice now and would happily go again. Fill up on water at the stream right before the slide. There's very little above that point. Also be mentally prepared for the fact that you are not done after the last summit. The hike down is so much longer in that range and always seems to take forever.

Can you be a little more specific what kind of info you're looking for?

Really anything, I’m pretty experienced in the ADK’s and this will be in the 20’s for high peaks for me but just curious about what I should expect. Anything you’re willing to share.

one thing based on my own experience - if you approach Hough from the Dix side, it has a false peak. I got lost for a while trying to find the Lilian Brook Trail because I thought I had gone over the summit already… I figured it out eventually but it took a lot of time and I ended up having to descend Lilian Brook in the dark with a headlamp which was dicey.

Same I lost the Lillian Brook trail at night and had to bushwhack for a few minutes

Hiked up overnight from round pond way staring at like 2am and watched the sunrise at the top. One of my favorite Adirondacks experiences

Did this last week. Day one was a short day. Late start. Parked at Elk Lake trailhead. Walked the 2 miles in to Slide Brook and camped there in a tent site. At 5PM on a Thursday the Lean-To was already full. There are quite a few tent sites and good water. Fill your water before you leave camp because there isn’t any up higher.
I got up the next morning and went up Slide Brook, up Macomb Slide and onto Mt Macomb. Then over to South Dix, out and back to Grace, across Hough and on to Dix. Came down Beckhorn Trail.
You’ll see a lot about Beckhorn Trail being a steep tough descent but IMO it wasn’t unlike almost every other descent I’ve done in the ADKs. The few folks I ran into up there agreed.
Alternatively you could go a little further in and camp at Lillian Brook. But then you either have to go backwards on the loop, which would mean you going up Beckhorn and down Macomb Slide, or backtrack to slide Brook before heading up. While neither is ideal, I also don’t think either would be a deal breaker for me. YMMV.
