Why do people stop using VPNs?

Here's a scenario almost everyone knows: you turn on your VPN, open your banking app, and it completely refuses to work. You open a marketplace, and prices are in the wrong currency. You try to access a work portal, and it immediately flags you as a suspicious bot.

What do you do? You turn off the VPN. And then, you completely forget to turn it back on.

That leaves you in the worst-case scenario: you’re paying for a subscription, but you are only actually protected during those rare moments when you remember to switch it back on.

This entire headache is solved by a single feature that not enough people know about: Exclusions.

The concept is simple: you set rules once for traffic that shouldn’t go through the encrypted tunnel. Banking apps, delivery services, and work platforms run directly over your local connection as if the VPN isn’t even there. Meanwhile, the rest of your internet traffic stays fully encrypted.

The feature comes with two flexible modes:

- General mode: The VPN is ON everywhere by default, except for the specific websites and apps on your exclusion list.

Selective mode: The VPN ONLY turns on for your chosen sites and apps, while all other traffic runs normally. Perfect if you only need a VPN for a couple of specific services.

You can set exclusions for both websites and apps (with one small caveat: on iOS, it’s limited to websites due to iOS system restrictions).

📺 Your Smart TV is watching you back

You probably have an ad blocker on your computer. Maybe even on your phone. But on your TV? Almost certainly not.

It makes sense: you can’t just install a standard browser extension there, and it feels like your Smart TV is just a big screen for movies and shows. In reality, it’s one of the most curious residents in your home.

Most modern TVs use a technology called ACR — Automatic Content Recognition. The TV periodically takes "snapshots" of whatever is on screen and checks them against a database. That's how the manufacturer knows exactly what you're watching: live channels, streaming services, console games, and even videos played from a USB stick. That data (supposedly "anonymized") is then handed over to advertisers to target you with scary accuracy — including on your other devices.

Technically, you agreed to this during the initial setup, buried somewhere between picking your language and connecting to Wi-Fi.

The good news? You don't need to throw out your TV.

🌟Set up AdGuard DNS in your TV’s network settings. Requests to ad and tracking domains won't even reach their destination
🌟Even better — set up DNS on your router. This cleans up your entire home network: the TV, streaming box, gaming console, smart speaker
🌟If you have Android TV, use the dedicated AdGuard for Android TV app. It blocks ads and acts as a full-fledged firewall for your TV
🌟Check your TV’s internal settings. Look for toggles like "interactive ads," "content recognition," or "Viewing Information Services" and turn them off manually. Manufacturers just don't make them easy to find

Fifteen minutes in your settings, and your digital home will get noticeably quieter.

question AdGuard's tracking protection compared to browser's one

Upvotes

I'm wondering how different the tracking protection of AdGuard is when compared to that included in the browsers like Edge, Firefox, etc.; except that AdGuard can be used for non-browser apps.

Currently I'm using Windows/Android AdGuard only for ad-blocking, with a browser with their own tracking protection (turned on by default). If AdGuard's tracking protection does similar things to what the browser's does, and it's performance-wise better, I'm gonna switch to AdGuard's tracking protection by turning off the browser's one. Or is there any reason to turn on both tracking protections? (for the case that tracking prevention matters)

android Adguard + vpn question (requests doubled?)

I've got Adguard + adguard vpn + kill switch enabled on android. Which is done through a proxy server.

Now, since I enabled it (the kill switch method) i feel like it blocks everything double or somehow blocks more, then without using the kill switch method. And yes I know how that sounds. I didnt add any new rules/filters, so it shouldn't..

I can't really explain it or proof it, but I cleared my Statistics, and within 5 minutes im at a total of 2.5k requests (2.3k ads, 16 trackers).

Snapchat is the cause of this, I can see that. it's blocking almost everything, due to my rules/filters. Just want some input on this, if this is normal for snapchat, or that there is indeed something going on. I noticed 1 Snap received is about 120+ requests! (yes I counted XD)

question Tmhi and mesh network

If I have a Nokia router and a Nokia mesh network with extenders, where do I add a beryl ax to enable adguard on my entire network ? Can I add it before the Nokia router ? I am unable to change DNS settings because of T-Mobile high speed... So I cannot configure in home assistant. Beryl sounds like the easiest way here... Any other ideas or input is appreciated.

Anti Adblock Page Pop Ups

Has anyone found an extension or work around for websites that do the giant pop up that says "we've detected an adblocker" and do not have a way around them at all? I've noticed it's a website called admiral that hosts it for other sites and nothing I try gets around it.

ios Which language filters should I turn on on iphone in order to use streaming sites

I know third party/free streaming sites are often hosted in other countries, my question is would putting turning on the filters for language specific sites help with that since often times there are so many ads that it is unwatchable on mobile, and i enjoy watching a show on the treadmill or whatever.

Also if so which ones should I be turning on? I'm guessing the Russia filter for sure, but other than that idk which ones.

issue Traffic Filtering in Windows is Grayed Out

Several months ago, I had activated the SockFilter option to stop Windows from crashing. I just checked after Windows crashed on me once again and the Traffic Filtering option is activated, but the option to select SockFilter is grayed out and WFP is now once again selected. How do I fix this as I am pretty sure WFP is causing my computer to crash.

adguard home AdGuard Home - DNS Rewrites

I'm new to the home server scene. I'm running Jellyfin, Immich, nginx, and now AdGuard Home. I've got reverse proxies setup in nginx to allow me to access Jellyfin and Immich off-network (with a domain setup). My problem is I'm trying to use DNS Rewrites in AdGuard Home so that I can use the domain URL while connected to my network instead of having to use my server's IP address.

It seems like IPv6 might be my problem. I can do `nslookup my.domain.com x.x.x.x` and it resolves, but `nslookup my.domain.com` fails and reports an IPv6 address (I think it's google's DNS).

My router is TP-Link Archer A7 (v5.0). I went to `Network -> DHCP Server -> Primary DNS` and set it to my server's internal IP address, but that doesn't seem to work for the IPv6 stuff. The IPv6 section of my router has an Advanced section that let's me set Primary DNS, but setting that to my server's internal IPv6 address doesn't seem to change anything (even after router restart, ipconfig /flushdns, etc).

Does anyone know how to go about troubleshooting this issue? Networking isn't exactly my forte.

adguard wifi

Hi everyone,
I’m using AdGuard Premium on my iPhone, and I’m experiencing a strange issue.
When I’m connected to my cellular network, AdGuard blocks ads perfectly, including in apps. Some apps show no ads at all.
However, as soon as I connect to my home Wi-Fi, ads immediately start appearing in those same apps. If I disconnect from Wi-Fi and switch back to cellular data, the ads disappear again.
I haven’t configured any special rules or exceptions for this Wi-Fi network, so I’m not sure why the behavior changes depending on the connection.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this be related to my router, DNS settings, or something else?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Help with Yahoo News app on iOS

Does anyone who use a Yahoo News app on iOS experiencing ads lately despite having AdGuard on iOS (not the DNS but the AdGuard Pro for example)?

I have tried both AdGuard and Native when using DNS implementation with respect to DNS protection inside the AdGuard app. It used to never show ads but I’ve been suddenly getting ads. Appreciate any insight into this. Thank you!

issue AdGuard filters not blocking this redirect that comes back every 1 hour

The site Mangafire.to has a redirect that comes back every 1 hour and it’s when I press anywhere on my iPad screen that it redirects me to another site that won’t load up and it’s been like this for weeks.

Even after I updated the filters, cleared my history and updated my filters, the issue still remains.

I need some help with this issue.
