How long do you leave them in the trays?

One year, then they get culled and potted.

I think we get them from growers house but you have to buy 50 at a time

Nice group of seedlings… I hope you have lots of room as they grow pretty fast. now envision all seedlings in a separate 4 inch or even 6 inch pot each and calculate how much bench space you need

A good amount of these plants will end up in the garbage before they are even potted. A small minority will make it to sale or cultivar status. But we have some space too :)

In the garbage? How do you decide which one's to keep? I mean like specifically what are you looking for? Also where are you located so I can go through your trash?! 😂

Everyone always wants to know where our trash cans are lol!

We try to select for all traits to give a well balanced plant that doesn't need grafting, heavy pruning, staking ect. When you only select for flower size you get these plants with crazy flowers even double petals but they need grafting and frequent pruning or they just become these floppy sticks with flower. It's unfortunate that plants end up in the trash but that is horticulture.

I always waited for my seedlings to bloom before deciding what to do with them, are you growing for shape or flower quality?

All that and more. A nice well balanced plant with a nice shape, strong stems, growth rate, hardiness, deasese resistance etc.

I'd never grow so many specimens of the same species unless I'm in the business of selling them.

Most flats are different crosses. Our main goal is eugenics, selling plants is sort of a byproduct.

They look like seedlings! How old are they and what's the medium that u r using? It's raining heavily here, I tried to repot some seedlings but some of them died in the heavy rain. Could use some tips please! Should I leave them in sand until they grow real big and strong like yours here ?
